The issue of converting ISO to DSF format (from Chinese users)
« on: January 30, 2025, 11:36:44 am »

The following is machine translation.

I am a JR user from China, and recently I encountered a problem about converting ISO files to DSF files. I hope to find the answer here.

Other JR users around me have told me that the operation of converting iso files to dsf files will result in an error in JR, which is that this process is not lossless conversion. They have all suggested that I use software like iso2dsd, but JR has always provided me with an unparalleled operating experience. I am not very keen on using other software, so I am here to ask for the answer.

I also conducted an experiment myself, using JR to forcibly convert a WAV file into a new WAV file. No matter how many times it is repeated, the MD5 value of the file will not change. However, the same operation, forcibly converting a DSF file into a new DSF file, changes the MD5 value with each conversion. Is there any other new value generated in between?

Also,  I have always used JR to cut CUE+WAV files and obtain each individual WAV file. Is this process lossless without sacrificing any sound quality? (Other JR users around me also advised me not to use JR for such operations)

Thank you very much!

MC doesn't support extracting DSF or DFF from a SACD ISO, any conversion to DSF or DFF will go through a PCM stage in the middle and yes, that means it's a lossy conversion. Extraction of DSF/DFF from SACD ISOs like sacd_extract does is one of my biggest items on my wishlist for MC in the future. Hopefully someday it comes true. :)

Until if/when that happens, yes, using iso2dsd or sacd_extract from the command line is the way to go to currently extract DSF files from a SACD ISO without any lossy conversion.

As for CUE+WAV I personally don't see any reason why it'd not work in MC, but I'm guessing most people use something like CUETools for that? But I believe it *should* work in MC and it'd be a lossless process, of course.
