Evaluation switching win->linux, performance issue with Theater View
Awesome Donkey:
Stuff like that is going to depend on the desktop environment being used, GPU being used (and maybe drivers like Mesa/Nouveav/proprietary drivers/etc.), if using X11 or Wayland is being used (MC doesn't support Wayland but mostly works with it through XWayland), etc. It's going to be different than on Windows (or macOS for that matter).

Those are long-standing issues, I am not sure whether there is a standard current distro with which MC plays nicely (as in download current stable version of that distro and install it using defaults)

I decided that that it works at all on Linux is better than a lot of softwares developed on Window will do for me. So I use it, pay for it, and appreciate that it exists for Linux.

Hi,
I bought a better 2nd hand laptop, with more decent perfs (I don't need high end at all, I use JRiver only for audio with parametric equalizer, no need for video).
I just bought the master licence upgrade and will test with mint (now installed cinammon) and tell how it works.
Regarding the remote, I bough a flirc usb dongle. It works with windows, I hope it will be the same with linux mint ;-)

So,
It works better with the "newer" laptop.
There are some issues with window display(in particular when exiting the theater view with "esc" key, then the river window is reduced and even when maximized the shortcut keys don't work so there's focus issue) but it can work somehow with the pointer.
I managed to configure the "para-equalizer" vst2 plugin (from "Linux Studio Plugins Project"), it works fine without audio drop (the dac is a Topping E30 II).
I had to disable the screen saver, I don't know if it's normal (the prevention from going into sleep mode JRiver option doesn't have an effect on it).
I need to do some fixes to the flirc/harmony configuration, but that's another story, not directly related to JRiver :)
