Theater View, shutdown possibility?
« on: April 13, 2025, 06:25:12 am »

Hi,

I migrated my 2 pcs used for listening music from windows to linux (mint 22.1, latest JRiver 33)

I have a question regarding a difference in the theater view: in the "exit" menu, on linux there's no option for shutting down the computer.
I checked in the task manager, the jriver process is running as my user.
Is it an absolute (hard-coded) limitation? Would only the root user has the right for shutdown?
Or is there a way to change this?

Note: if not possible then I'll check what I can do with the flirc dongles that I bought, it seems that macros can be recorded, I didn't check yet if scripts could be executed in linux support (or maybe adding shortcut for shutdown?)

As I have been slowly moving towards Linux for my Media Center usage,  this is one aspect I had not yet tested in my requirements.

Thank-you for raising the issue.

To the point, as I see it, as a plain, vanilla user on the up-to-date Linux Mint (using Mate window manager) laptop here, I have found that Media Center works well for my needs.

But those needs have not yet included an analysis of how well Theater mode works for my needs.

So, based upon your comment, I pressed Ctrl-4, and went to the Exit menu pick.

When I went to the System Sleep, Shutdown & More menu pick, I did not see a shutdown option to select.

OK, for me, that prevents me from using Media Center in my entertainment center.

While I have been testing Media Center on Linux as a replacement for Media Center on the Windows 10 PC in the entertainment center (and, honestly, it's been all sunshine and roses up until this thread), I had not yet faced the shutdown issue.

So, for me, and my testing of Linux, it is now a full stop.  I seem to be stuck with Windows.

And, I want to add, on this Linux Mint laptop, where Media Center does not show me the previously noted Shutdown prompt. I can issue, as a user, the command

Code: [Select]
shutdown -P now
and the laptop shuts down.

So, there does not seem to be a need for admin privileges to shutdown the computer, at least from a command line.

So I haven't tested this here, but a quick thought:

You can add a theater view menu item that runs any external program you like.  If your user can run "shutdown" in the terminal and it works with no password prompt, you could just make a simple script that includes your shutdown command, mark it executable, and then add it as an external program to theater view.  Give it a try, and if that works you've got an easy workaround.

Many thanks for your suggestions, I will try to see what's possible as customization and about permissions from linux  ;)
