Help on basic set up
« on: March 27, 2025, 03:26:57 pm »

Hi,
my setup is simple: an HTPC running JRiver connected to a Samsung TV and a Krell Processor both via HDMI.

Everything works fine, now I want to control the HTPC from another copy of JRiver in my laptop.

I enabled Media Network and DLNA on the HTPC and I configured the remote library on the laptop so far so good.

The problem is that the only renderer that appears on the playing now is the Samsung TV...

I was hopping to get the HTPC as a renderer and continue to play to the Krell Processor as if I was playing directly from the HTPC.

Is that even possible? the wiki says that JRiver can act a renderer but I can't find the correct configuration.

thanks a lot for your help

That's exactly what I have done but I do not see the server in the playing now, only the TV....(see attached picture)
I tried restarting the server and the client but no luck
Any ideas?

Media Network must be turned on on both sides.

Ports need to be open on both sides.

It can take a couple of minutes sometimes.

I enabled media network on the client (it was already enabled on the server) but still nothing on the playing now except for the TV (see picture)
I have disable the firewall on both computers and still nothing appears on the playing now...
Don't know what else to try....

First check if the HTPC shows up with its correct IP Address under the client laptop's Tree > Services & Plug-ins > Media Network > SSDP (Device Discovery) tab.

If so, try adding the HTPC as a Dynamic Zone on the client laptop:
RMB client laptop's Playing Now > Add Dynamic Zone... > Enter HTPC's IP Address in the popup.

After a minute or two, the HTPC should then show up under client's Playing Now.  If so, you can RMB it to rename if desired.

Tks mark,

HTPC shows up on SSDP, ok
Added a dynamic zone with the HTPC IP address on the client laptop, waited 10 minutes and still nothing new on the playing now....

if the HTPC is showing up on the SSDP then the firewall is not blocking the connection, right?

tks

SSDP finds devices.  To connect, a server must be running and the ports must be open for it.  See Network Access on the wiki.

I'm wondering if you've done the basics.

The server must be running.  Media Network must be on there.  That shows you an Access Key.

On the client, you use that Access Key to load the library from the server.  Media Network should be turned on on the client, too.

Is that what you've done?

library is loaded on the client with the Access Key from the server
media network is on on both the client and the server
what else am I missing?

This is normally straight forward to set up.  It's odd that it isn't working for you.

Problems like this are often caused by security software.  Antivirus ...  But I believe you've checked this carefully.

The server has a test you can run.  It's in the Media Network section.  It might tell you something.

What happens if you disconnect the Krell?

I just re-read the thread.  Is port 52199 open?  You may have a firewall on either computer or both.

Additional sanity checks:

Tree > Playing Now > RMB on any zone > Show/Hide Zone > ...    (check that HTPC zone is not hidden).

Also, the client laptop Tree > Services & Plug-ins > Media Network > SSDP (Device Discovery) tab should contain an entry "[name of HTPC]: [name of HTPC]: Dynamic (IP address)" as long as Media Center 3x Service is running on both computers.  Refresh the tab by hitting its Rescan button.

* Be sure the version of JRiver Media Center xx Service which is running matches your current Media Center application version.  If you have upgraded MC, it is possible that a prior version of the service is still around.  Best to check under Windows Services and disable prior versions, just to be certain.  BTW, which versions of MC and Windows are you running?

I disconnected the Krell (HDMI) but still nothing
I turned off all the firewalls (domain, private and public) on the HTPC and the client laptop and still nothing

I checked on the playing now and no zone is hidden (the only one showing is the TV)

On the SSDP I can see the HTPC IP address listed, I tried to add that IP as a dynamic zone on the playing now menu but still nothing

I even did a port forward on the router for port 52199 on the HTPC

I can connect to the HTPC from my laptop with panel, select the audio device and everything works fine (audio plays from the Krell)
The Panel connection is using the same port 52199 so the firewalls are not the problem

It must be some setting that I got wrong...

...just in case you overlooked this:  The three DLNA settings highlighted in the attachment should be selected (as shown) as part of your DLNA setup on the server.  At a minimum, the second one is needed to enable adding the server as a Dynamic Zone to a client.

If none are checked, then the client will still be able to connect to the server with Panel, since Panel itself does not use DLNA for its server connection.
