Zap2it Dead, now what?
« on: March 26, 2025, 06:35:50 pm »

Apparently the Zap2it website was shut down yesterday, with all web requests redirected to https://www.newsnationnow.com/newsnation-tv-schedule/. The Zap2XML program will no longer retrieve EPG data. I also tried the TVGuide setting for Zap2XML, but it comes back with "unknown domain mobilelistings.tvguide.com", which is strange since I can ping that URL.  I have about two weeks of data in my grid, but now I need to find a new EPG source. I tried activating MC2XML in J River, and it ran but failed to retrieve any data.

So, what are my options now? Zap2XML hasn't had any updates for four years, so it doesn't appear to still be in active development. Is Perc data still a viable data source? Is there any remaining free online data source? Is MC2XML working, but I have something mis-configured? I've been using Zap2IT for years without an issue, but I do need an EPG data source.

I'm still using Percdata. Even though its a pay service I really don't use OTA a lot but the program listings appear to be mostly correct.

I switched to SiliconDust DVR subscription a few years ago. Guide info easily gels with JRiver.

I never actually setup the SD DVR software, maybe one day when ATSC 1.0 goes dark.

I'm not adverse to paying for some sort of subscription, but this is used so little it didn't seem vital. But I do need some sort of EPG. I do have a SD tuner, so maybe that's the smartest way to handle it. If there's a how-to for configuring using SD I'd appreciate a link. :)

I have subscribed to the DVR service, and have installed the authentication code in my HDHR app. By the way, the link on the forum post to subscribe to the service is no longer valid on the SD website.

Since it also told me I had to activate DLNA on my server, I'm now seeing multiple entries for the same TV station. Some are listed as ATSC and some are Tunerstream. Does it make any difference which of these I select? I assume I don't want them all selected, so I just want to ensure I select the correct ones. I seem to remember when I had DLNA selected in the past that not every listed channel appeared in the EPG, so I missed some shows I wanted to record. I don't want to make that mistake again.  ;D

You don't need DLNA to use JRiver with SiliconDust tuners.

Are you sure Jim?  A few years back I needed to enable the DLNA controller checkbox in order to use my SiliconDust network tuner, and at the time Yaobing told me that DLNA was required to get the tuners to work in JRiver.  Has that changed?

It would be nice to be able to turn DLNA off on some machines that use the tuner, so I hope you're right!

Yes, I think you need to turn on DLNA on for the tuners to be visible. But then you can go into "Manage Devices" to disable either DLNA devices or Open Cable devices so you don't see duplicate channels.

https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/TV_Tuners#HDHomeRun

Note:
1. If you use DLNA mode, bitstream audio will not work.
2. If using DLNA mode with Server/Client(s), you may run into "no tuner available" because they don't have awareness of what tuner is in use on which machine.
3. If you want to see ATSC3 stations, you have to use DLNA mode.

Depends on your situation. Generally if you are just using ATSC 1.0 and want bitstream audio, you are safe to disable the "DMS" devices.

I only record ATSC 1.0 programs, since VideoReDo won't edit the 3.0 programs. VRD has no AC-4 audio support, so they won't load, and since the program is now orphaned there's no hope of future updates.

Thanks, I'll disable the DMS device.
