Hardware Question
« on: May 04, 2025, 01:35:01 pm »

After upgrading to 34 I'm wondering if a little n100 mini pc is enough to run JRiver music and photos only? if so; what would be the recommended os? I own a master license.

Photos and Music are stored on a local nas. The wife wants to listen to music while watch family slideshows in Theater mode.

Definitely. You could go lower power if it's just music and photos. Should be able to run JRVR for movies too. I'd stick with Windows 11 to future proof it and give you the most flexibility.

Should be more than enough for music and photos. Windows 11 is what I'd recommend too, assuming that's what you're already running.

Wanted to thank you for your recommendations.

Posting for future reference.

The N100 mentioned is a GMKtec mini I bought about a year ago as a daily driver. After a few months watching the cpu pegged at 100% I loaded LMDE. Reloading Win11 to run JRiver was quite the ordeal. At first, I ran a regular Win11 install usb made with Media Creator, everything came up except no internet. The box was plugged into ethernet during the entire install. Research showed you have to download the original OS from GMKtec's website to get internet connectivity. OK, but the OS is a zip file in google drive and took over 12 hours to download the 16gb file. The fun didn't stop there. After unzipping the (not an iso) files are copied to a usb drive labelled winpe, the label is very important. And there's more. The computer is booted with the usb plugged in and does stuff. After the computer turns itself off about 30 minutes later, the usb is unplugged before powering up the box again. Then it does some more stuff in a cmd window before rebooting into a traditional windows install sequence.

Anyways, thanks for the guidance and have a good day!

I've used 2 MeLE 4C Quieter with N100 and a MeLE Quieter DL with N100 with MC33  for 1080P and 4K playback (with JRVR performance preset) and music playback without issues running Win 11. They're silent and small (although I used double sided thermal tape to attach heat sinks on top and bottom for the 4C Quieter pcs and two on top for the Quieter Dl (dual lan). In experimenting with Zorin 17.3 Pro Linux on the Quieter DL I notice that there can be a delay in starting the video pulled from my NAS but once playback begins, it is smooth and seeking/scanning ahead or back works fine.  I prefer Win 11 to Linux due to my greater familiarity with Windows but both should work fine.

If using Windows 11, maybe make sure the Smart App Control feature is disabled as that was causing a few people issues on the forums as of late.

Open the Windows Security (AKA Windows Defender) app, go to Apps & browser control and under Smart App Control select Smart App Control settings and make sure it's set to Off.
