Author Topic: Change a tag label while retaining the information for that label?  (Read 319 times)

Almost everything I have in MC is classical music. In the tags section I have thousands of of items classified as "Albums" that are in fact individual "Works". For example, Beethoven's 5th Symphony is a "work", and currently I have it tagged as an "Album", which it is not. Can I eliminate the "Album" tag label and replace it with with "Work" while retaining the corresponding information?

Thanks very much for taking time to reply to my post.  I have read both of the recommended discussions, and neither address my question, which is:  I have over ten thousand music files in MC that are currently tagged as "Album" that I want to be tagged as "Work".  How can I change these thousands of "Album" tag entries to "Work" tag entries?  Ideally, I would like eventually to be able to use the "Album" tag in order to indicate what "Works" are on a particular CD or LP.  But when I search for something to listen to I look for specific "Works" (by composer) and not for "Albums".

I think you might be coming at this from the wrong direction...
MC has a stock [Work] field.

Pick a file or three...
Right click > Library tools > Move/Copy fields
Source = Album
Destination = Work

Decide upon move or copy and press OK. Happy? Select them all and repeat.

If this is not helpful, then I've misunderstood the question/scenario.

You are correct, marko.  Absolutely.  In fact I did recently discover that MC has a stock [Work] field.  Unfortunately, I didn't know this several years ago when I began to use MC.  That's why I have classified thousands of what are indeed "Works" as "Albums". In the "Audio" field I can easily rename, and I have renamed "Albums" to "Works" and "Recent Albums" to "Recent Works".

But the problem remains when it comes to tags. There, the "Album" category stubbornly remains, and I haven't been able to rename that category as "Work".  So, anything I import into MC that I want to tag I can't tag as a "Work", and I'm obliged to tag it as an "Album".

Renaming Tags/Fields is something Users are not allowed to do.

But there is a fairly easy way of copying the contents of the Album tag/field to the Work tag/field.
Locate and open an Album that contains info you want to copy the data to the Work tag/field, select all of the tracks on that album, then in the TagWindow open the Work field/tag and put =[Album] in it and MC will copy the contents of the Album field/tag to the Work field/tag for you.

Once you are happy that action achieves what you want you can then repeat the exercise but this time you select all the other Albums where you want the contents of the Album tag/field to the Work tag/field.

Evening ET, and billinrio...

This is pretty much the same as my advice, which was reported as not cutting it.

I've been trying to figure out what, exactly, the issue is.

Absolutely, all of the [Album] data needs to be copied (or moved) to the [Work] field. Which brings us to this:
You are correct, marko.  Absolutely.  In fact I did recently discover that MC has a stock [Work] field.  Unfortunately, I didn't know this several years ago when I began to use MC.  That's why I have classified thousands of what are indeed "Works" as "Albums". I think that confusion is being introduced by incorrect use of terminology. This is no criticism of billinrio, at all. When you know, you know, right? Every day's a school day ;)

Allow me to try and decipher, hopefully, billinrio can confirm or correct.
In the "Audio" field I can easily rename, and I have renamed "Albums" to "Works" and "Recent Albums" to "Recent Works".
"Audio" is not a "Field". Generally speaking, a Field in MC is anything you see in the Tag Window. "Album" and "Work", for example, are both "Fields"
I'm thinking that by this, you mean the "Audio" branch of the tree in the left panel? The one at the top? Either that, or it's under the Playlists, in the tree?

Either way, you can rename them to anything you like, but, if you do not change the underlying rules that govern what files are displayed, nothing else will change bar the entry name in the tree.

But the problem remains when it comes to tags. There, the "Album" category stubbornly remains, and I haven't been able to rename that category as "Work".  So, anything I import into MC that I want to tag I can't tag as a "Work", and I'm obliged to tag it as an "Album".
The terms "Field" and tags are pretty much interchangeable, although, "tags" is more often than not, used to describe field data that is also saved in the file itself. Also referred to as Metadata.

"Categories" in MC, are levels of view filtering.

I think that you need to customise the view that you're having issues with by removing the "Album" category, and adding the "Work" category in its place.
See this primer for guidance in regards to that...
