That is nothing but a "fast forward for 30 seconds at a time" trick.  RePlay TV and many RCA VCR's use Commercial Advance, which analyzes the program after it is recorded, and finds the commercials.  On playback these sections are automatically fast-forwarded overy without any interaction by the user!  I used to have one of the RCA VCR's, and it worked brilliantly!

If I lived in America I would pay SERIOUS $$$ for one of those.

You guys get soooo many adverts it's pathetic. I think you get an equal amount of shows and adverts.

While I was there this is how I found it was:

show end: adverts
credits: adverts
Intro credits for next film: adverts
film starts

in england we have:

show ends with credits: adverts
next sohw begins

and I find that bad enough

Nila

I guess its equally weird that we have to have a licence to watch TV in the UK, but you are SO right. Example: Seinfeld ends ("Is anybody here a marine biologist?") - adverts - Seinfeld comes back for 30 sec for the credits - adverts - next programme.

Frustrating. But where else can you get Seinfeld on at least one of hundreds of channels every night. Plus in the USA you get the Weather Channel - my favourite TV station ever. If we had that in England I could throw my remote control away.

Cultural differences - you gotta love 'em.

Actually, this is not new and has been around for a long time.  For legal reasons, TiVo has not made an issue of this feature.  They are trying to keep the networks off their back.

If you visit the TiVo forum at http://www.avsforum.com, you can find a thread with numerous "back door codes" for hidden TiVo features.  Some of these features only work based on which version of the TiVo software your machine has installed.

Advert-skipping is to TV as P2P networks are to Music.

Getting the product without "paying" for it.  My opinion, of course.

Have to chuckle at this. How many brand name products can you identify in any given show? Even if they roll the label you can still usually guess at what it is. Nothing is free.   :P

Dishplayers (Dish Network) have a 30s skip ahead - 7s skip back. Has a built in 20GB IDE HD which equates to about 17 hours of recording time (called Personal TV). Of course, that is not nearly enough. Wanted to throw a 60 GB in...e-mailed DN Tek Sup and they didn't want to help. So....

Does/will MC have the same functionality that I'm used to in PTV?

I'm paying my subscription to the cable so I'm paying for the shows. I dont need that many ad's.
I'd be willing to pay more to get less ad's as would a lot of people I'm sure.
We just dont have it as an option!

That's cuz you're not really paying for the shows.  You can get the shows for free by using an antenna.  What you're really paying the cable company for is access to their infrastructure that gives you better reception and a wider choice of programming.  :)

look like here ,in Israel, situation is better.
We have some state channels where ads are forbiden.
But they can have a sponsor.
So before and after ,you get the sponsor ad. But in a very retro way . No movie ,just a static picture with the product and a voice making a kind of radio ad!!!
It is so much plain retro - and short- what you allmost enjoy it!

We have 2 private channels who ,from time to time give some programs in a middle of ads.....
Anyway they give such bad and stupid programs that people watching it are the kind not seing difference between ads ans programs...
One of them may close soon by the way ,cause there is no room for 2 such garbages here.

Concerning cable or sat==== NO ADS ,period

We have 2 kinds of programs on cable/sat.

What i may call 'live chanels'= foreigner channels as CNN -Sky News-BBC-France -Germany-Spain-Italy and so on. Because people are from all around the word here ,we have a lot of this channels.
In this case you get the program live and get the same ads than anyone.

Cable or sat programs
Movies ,nature, wild life ,culture and many many others.
All of them must have hebrew subtitles - arabs and russian as well for digital-
And ,NO ADS.
The only ads they can put are ones for they own programs, and only between two programs.
Sure ,not the only raison ,but here  allmost 100% of the country is with cable or sat TV.

It's funny in a way, when you've been flogged by this stuff all your life you hardly notice it anymore. I guess from a different perspective on the U.S. it would seem somewhat strange.

One recent statistic I've heard is for the Super Bowl (American football championship). People tuning in are more interested in the commercials then the actual game. By almost 3 to1 margin. Sad...  :-X
