Media Center 9.0.97 beta
« on: January 14, 2003, 12:51:56 pm »

Media Center 9.0.97 beta is available.

Many things will crash and not work.  If that worries you, please wait for a couple of weeks.

ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter90097.exe

Changes

1. Changed: CD burner uses original file's last modification date rather than the current date for burned data files.
2. Fixed: Handheld and file transfer DB files were never being flushed, causing slow speed and high memory usage. (start and close MC once to fix)
3. Fixed: If MC was seldom used and it had files in Playing Now from an external source, Playing Now could lose its saved playlist.
4. Fixed: Analyze Audio "skip" logic was reversed.
5. Changed: Some UI tuning of "properties" pane borders and sizes.
6. NEW: Added scrollbar skinning to MEGA-ME skinning. (try "Z" skin for an example)
7. Fixed: Media Center was not copying registry info during plug-in installation.
8. Fixed: Media Server did not work with latest version of Media Center.
9. Fixed: Auto-searching for Media Server did not work.
10. Fixed: Get cover art from internet did not work.

We're still getting more bugs reported than we can fix each build. Please keep a list of bugs you find, and re-report anything that doesn't get fixed each build.

Thanks for your help and support.

John T., I just burned an audio CD from an MP3 playlist at 4X speed as you suggested.  I t did come out OK except that the artist were listed as various instead of their individual names.  This burn was done on ver 9.0.96 and I will now install 9.0.97 and see how that goes   For anyone out there that does not appreciate their burner speeds just try 4X.  Thank you for responding to my problem.  Joe Karnes

MC is still losing file associations on opening.  They keep reverting to Winamp.

This only seems to happen if the option to always associate with file types is selected.  If this is turned off there are no problems so it seems that it is actually doing the reverse to what it should be!!!

John T., I just tried to burn an audio CD from an MP3 playlist at 10X and decode files directly to CD.  I received an error message cannot write medimum - incompatible format.  Let me know if you want me to try again at a different speed or setting.  Thank you, Joe Karnes

The memory leak in analyze audio is still there.  It very nearly just killed my PC.  I couldn't see exactly where it had got to as XP shut MC down during the meory outage, however I guess it was less than 150/705.

1)Clicking a ***.rm link downloads the file instead of streaming it.  If I cut and paste the link in to "Open URL of streaming file" dialog box, the file streams fine.

2)Clicking on a ***.ram link does nothing.  Again, if I cut and paste it into "Open URL of streaming file" dialog box, the file streams fine.

BOTH file types are registered under MC9 in IE Folder options.

3)Somebody reported this before, but I have the same problem: Playing a stream from a web station, MC9 adds several instance of the playlist and imports the stream as a file.

4) Noise, with Replay Gain enabled, in songs that are recorded at HIGHER volume than playlist average.  Clip protection is enabled.  Restarting the song usually eliminates the problem.

5)If you check the remember volume setting option; MC9 does not reset it back to pre-MC9 level when the program is closed.

6)When Mega-Me windows is Maximized the "Maximize" button in the right upper corner DOES NOT change to "restore" button.

7) Still can't import Album Art.

Cannot record. None of the situations identified are applicable. There is only the "mixer" option in the recorder setup. "Line-in" is what worked before. I know "mixer" is supposed to work in any case but "line-in" is the thing that did work.

Edit: MC is really starting to hate APE Image files. This was the cause. Before the APE file was just screwing up the completed album entries. Now it's doing it to the database as well.

The thing is when I import, I do have some regular ape files and I need to turn this option on and it will import those image files aswell screwing everything up.

Edit2: It's actually the name of the image file that's doing it (Tag). When first imported, it has the path name as "name". When correcting the Artist and Album fields of the APE file, then all the APL files will show up. This still doesn't solve the completed albums section. Removal of the APE file will correct it.

-----
some files are not showing up again.

I ripped about 4 cds using EAC v0.9b4 using cue sheets. They were encoded using MAC 3.97 DLL. I then made the APL files as usual. There was no tagging done to the files with EAC, just with MakeAPL.

These CDs are being scanned by MC as they are in the database but they don't show up in Arist/Album. The tags also look fine. The format page is pulling the data from it.

I redid the APL files and reloaded them into MC. Exact same thing is happening. It just doesn't like something I guess. My other APL files are working just fine. The only thing that the files have in common is that they were the last ones I did.

Still can't play CD's (problem since 9.090).  Player shows up in CD, DVD & Handhelds, and it sees a CD - audio cd (1) e:

But no files show up and get warning message "please select file(s) to play" when attempting to play.  All files *.cda visible and playable from Explorer.

Bugs:
1. MC still cannot just burn an audio CD with Crossfading only turned on and 'Use DSP & Playback settings' enabled.  When you attempt to burn the audio CD, MC wants to analyze each track first which is not needed for doing burns that do NOT involve Replay Gain (eg. Replay Gain is disabled in DSP settings)...per Matt.

2. CD burn stats are always wrong the first time the CD burn information box is displayed.  You always have to click away (on another Org Tree node) and return to the CD burn list to see the correct stats...this has been broken for a long, long, long, long time.

3. Renaming column headings (via Tree & View Settings option) breaks functions in MC that use template keywords like [Name], [Track #], [Album].  Example: If you rename the Name field to 'Song Title', the Rename from File properties function does not work if [Name] is used...you have to use [Song Title]...so the stock templates are forever broken.  Seems like MC should be using internal (fixed) names when attempting to match the 'fixed' templates.

good news bad news about media server. It works great on port 80. port 11112 not at all. I use the server to listen to my music at work and my isp is not partial to services run on port 80. They think it's a website which violates my TOS.

  • Fixed: The Analyze Audio "Skip Analyzed Files" checkbox is reversed.  It skips when unchecked.
  • Fixed: The Analyze Audio progress bar caption always says "xxx / 0" where xxx is the current file.
  • Fixed: The Recently Imported playlist has disappeared again and if you create one, it disappears with a restart.
  • Sort Of Fixed: Can't connect to any media server.  Now can only connect if using port 80
  • Kinda Fixed: Searching for media servers always results in "Invalid Media Server Information" (see below)

  • New: Now that you can get past the "Invalid Media Server Information" message box when searching for media servers, I still get multiple duplicate replies from the server if either the server or client have multiple network interfaces.
  • New: When the media server responds to a search, it responds with the first interface it's bound to even if that interface isn't reachable by the client that issued the search request.   My server has 2 interfaces, one private, one public.  My laptop is on the public network.  I issue a search from the laptop and the server responds with the name and ip address of the private interface which the laptop can never reach.  Combined with the previous problem, I can get 4 responses for the private interface, all useless.
  • New: If the client actually gets only 1 response, it tries to connect immediately.  It should problably give you an option to see the response and confirm that you want to connect to it.
  • New: If you cancel out of the list box with the responses you get a "failed to connect" message and you get dumped into the default library instead of the library you were originally connected to.

  • Column widths aren't saving again.  You have to drag the column separator twice to get the first change to stick.
  • View schemes based on artist with grouping size greater than 1 are broken.  The tree entry for the group has a special character in it and there are no entries in the group.  I.E.  A tree entry that should be "A-C" show up as "A?A-C" where ? is a "square block" character.
  • Installing 9.0.95 blew away all my my custom view schemes.
  • Overflow handling always reverts to "clip protection"
  • When "Decode directly to CD" is unchecked, and you burn more than 1 CD, the raw temp file is deleted and recreated for each CD instead of using the one created at the start of the first burn.
  • In "File Naming and Location" you can't enter paths with leading or trailing periods.  I.E.  If I try to enter a path for track images like "m:\.coverart" the period gets stripped out as soon as I move the cursor out of the entry field. Any valid file system path should be allowed.
  • Can't turn off tooltips for the drop target and player controls.
  • MP3 Encoder settings are broken again.  If you select "custom" and press advanced, you get the quality selection dialog instead of the custom command line dialog.
  • Analyze audio during rip doesn't do anything.
  • Burn space status bar is incorrect on first look.  Have to refresh to get it right.
  • When collapsing "Auto Smartlists (audio)" after selecting one of the random or favorite lists, the app hangs for about 10 seconds while spinning the cpu at 100%. (maybe not a "problem", but it's still a pain)
  • Ripping in digital secure mode hangs near the end of the last audio track if there is also a data track on the cd.  Have to cancel, wait for everything to release, then rip the last track in digital large buffer mode.

Windows ME:

Ipod plugin installs, and better yet, appears to work.  Haven't tried a 'delete files' synch yet; I don't want to temp fate.  Other issues:

1. As Moriarty posted, the CD drives show up on the tree, but they don't detect a CD when placed into the drive.

2.  If I try to delete a song from the library, and also select "delete from hard drive?", I get an error message:

Media jukebox has caused an error in UNICOWS.DLL.
Media jukebox will now close.

DOH!!! Unicows is back!! Who are these solitary bovine fiends anyway??

The only place the unicows file is present is in C/WIN, and now that it is there, I can't remove it...And, with all the unicode problems, probably shouldn't even if I could.

3.  When I go into "customize toolbar,"  there are no "add" options  (with the exception of the seperator)--I can only remove functional icons from the toolbar; can't add any.

The CD player does not work properly: there is a continual clicking in the background -- like some elf tap dancing on the CD. This problem has been present since build 89.

Holy corrupted database batman!  I had 394,000 records in my MC database!

Turns out a number of these were from the iPod plugin, but I also noticed records for every CD that I've ever burned in MC (.cda files).  I also saw files from Games in there (that were present in my CD when I was using MC).

So, I know that you are going to fix it so the iPod plugin doesn't make entries, are you also going to fix the .cda files getting entered and the other entries from automatically getting entered?

Just wondering, I'm hoping this will improve performance greatly.  Haven't been able to test it because it's been 5 minutes and counting and it's still deleting.

Oh, since it's not on this thread anymore, to see if you have bogus records in your database, select the Music Library, then type ~d=a in the Smartlist filter field.

Thanks to Randy for that.

Off to more database crime fighting.

**EDIT** MC9 crashed during the delete of those 394,000 records, so I just cleared my library.  Now it's only using about 7MB when it starts up and is blazingly fast.  Joy, Joy!

Very nice skinned scroll bar, but be very careful touching the one in the main window...you'll get an interesting interactive visual for your eyes! Dancing album art or song titles!

East Asian Character Problem[/size]

 Hi All,
I got a Unicode glitch with the East Asian characters.

With build .95 I started to enter some Japanese names and titles, etc. into the database/ID Tags.

All the Japanese names worked fine and I could install build .96 with no change BUT when I installed build .97 I found that all the characters turned into strings of "?" instead of Japanese characters. All previously entered info was lost or not displayed properly.

Also, the message, "failed to update ID Tag", or something like this, appears when I press the "command" bar and then select "apply changes".

Does MC save Title, Artist, Album info in the ID3 Tage of the music file or does it save this info in another files/database?

I don't think these are very big bugs it I am worried that I will keep having to re-enter names, titles, etc - in Japanese - every time I install a new version of Media Center.

 Good luck!! :)

P.S. I bought MC9 today!!!!!!

APE, OGG, and WMA all support Unicode.

MP3 ID3v2 *can* support Unicode, but we haven't done it yet.  We're not sure if other programs will be able to read the tags if we start using Unicode encoding in the MP3 tag.  Once things settle down, we'll dig some more on this.

Thanks!

John T., I just burned another audio CD of MP3 tracks at 6X speed with decode files directly to CD not selected.  The CD sounds fine on several players I have tried in our home and vehicles, but it and all other CDs sound bad played on MC.  The artist for each track were burned correctly as listed on the playlist.  I will try more burns tomorrow at faster write speeds.  Thank you, Joe Karnes

Matt,
Thanks for the update on the ID3 & Unicode.
Do you think that MC will be ok with Japanese / Chinese / Korean by the final build?
I can enter Japanese now using the "Properties -> Track Info" tool and it seems to work well.
Anyway, I hope this will work well with ID3 so that I can install all my Japanese collection.

I think that if the ID3 tag info is unicode it will be fine with other programs. All western characters are always entered in single byte and only CJK are entered with double byte (I think this is true).

Thank you for the quick reply and keep up the good work. If you need anything from me please let me know.

Cannot record. None of the situations identified are applicable. There is only the "mixer" option in the recorder setup. "Line-in" is what worked before. I know "mixer" is supposed to work in any case but "line-in" is the thing that did work.
In the "recorder settings" dialog, are there multiple choices for "recording device"? If so, try a different one and see if there are more choices for recording sources.

What do you mean bogus records?  I don't quite understand the db structure in MC9.  I have several thousands of files when I type in the above ~b=a so should I delete these?  Does this impact the music in my library?

MC caches explorer files, files that are on CDs, and external files you're playing or transferring.

Media Center will automatically clean up anything that shouldn't be around anymore after it "expires", so you shouldn't need to manually delete anything.

Latest MC v9.0.97 produces excellent sound in my PC speaker. :o I feel this version sounds much better than previous version. Did you do something to improve the sound or is this just my own feeling? Can you answer please?

  • Issue ripping from my second CD Drive (G):

message: Failed to get track info: The device name is already being used as an alias by this application. Use a unique alias.  Would you like to keep trying further tracks. Y/N

Y: Read Track Failed Failed to Read

OK: Would you like to continue with more tracks Y/N

Then just repeats cycle.  Message in copy window says initialising.

It already has the YADB data for the CD and is displaying fine in MJ viewer.  Ripping to MP3 192 CBR, exact settings work fine for primary CD drive.

I have been ripping from both drives in previous V9 MJ builds, (can't remember which).  Happens with and without Digital playback selected.

I am going to upgrade and try with .97 soon.

UPDATE: in .97 same results, always with my second drive, and if I have a cd in each drive, I get the same error with the first drive.  I have to re-start MC, and then I can rip from the first drive again.

UPDATE II: There also seems to be some correlation between getting the yadb data.  Selecting all CD files, and then changing the album name, then trying to rip it.  I can't quite work out what triggers it exactly, but when it is caused through changing the album name, restarting MC allows it to burn fine.

  • It also takes ages to list the CD contents with the Anaylsing Devices popup (avg 20-40 seconds) Then it goes to YADB.

  • ADDED: In .97 that jump on the scroll bars is definately pretty rough, (ripping CD status window).

Regards
Mark

Should there be any MC related reason why I'm having heavily increased lag times in accessing my files on fire wire drives? Altering properties and embedding images on those drives is significantly slower than on my IDE drives. This was not an issue in MC9.88 or MJ8.

I agree, noticed it right off the bat.

Yaobing

Is TV broke again?

Last used 9.0.88 ---- no problem.

This ver. ------ there are problems.

Since you run an AIW figured I would ask befor giving details.

Also using Cat drivers dated 1/13/2003.

Cover art:

All my music is in Ape format.

Built new sys end of Dec.

copied jriver/media center/data and media jukebox/data to new hard drive. (so I would not lose cover art)

Loaded MC 9.0.88, then loaded MJ 8 library.

Noticed I had aroung 60 pieces of cover art missing.
The Images were in the cover art dir., but for some reason 9.0.88 asigned unknown.jpg to the tag on import.

So in 9.0.97 I tried to fix them.

The images are in the right format as explained in other threads.

Cannot get much of anything working on finding these.
Everything just hangs.

I am able to get the add function to work just once and on a second add cover it hangs.

Thanks
Griff

Matt:

I'm assuming you mean that it just recently started deleting after the files expire.  Because it wasn't doing that until (possibly) .97.  What does "expire" mean?  I mean I had .cda files in there from the first CD I ever ripped in MC9 (months ago).

Is it typical for the FTP server to be slow to connect?  I am trying to download the latest beta version but IE has been stuck on a blank FTP site for about 10 minutes.  Is it me or the site?

Matt,

I'm glad the "saved entries" problem is fixed. Thanks!

Could you pls do us a favor?

When you lock a beta topic, as you soon will lock this topic, could you please post a "New Beta Available" message as the last entry on the topic being closed? If you're really feeling benevolent, a link to your first message on the new beta topic would be very helpful.

That way we'd all know right when it is posted and be able to get to it ASAP.

TIA, Randy

CD files never get flushed, but you can manually erase them from the "CD & DVD" Media Library view.

And don't worry too much about how many files you have in your DB, unless it's some crazy amount like a few hundred thousand. (MC is fast, even with lots of files)

John T., I have now successfully burned audio CD's from MP3 playlist at 4X ,6X ,8X and 10X.  I am unable to burn at 12X, 14X or 16X and I was able to burn at those speeds with previous versions of MC.  I still have audio distortions when MC is first opened and a track is selected to play.  When I stop and restart play of the same or other selection, the sound quality will be improved.  Thank you, Joe Karnes

MC9.0.97

When I put a CD in the drive, and have a playlist playing, MC stops the playlist as soon as the YADB lookup is complete, and starts to play a random track from the CD, (shuffle is on),  without being asked! ? Is there anywhere to turn this off or is it expected behaviour??  I am currently ripping my CD collection to mp3, and so keep putting disks in and out while trying to listen to my existing playlist in the background, (an awesome feature btw), and I have to keep stopping the CD, and restarting the playlist.

Thanks

I think this is the expected behaviour if Media Jukebox is set to "Associate with Audio CDs".  The way I get around the feature is to hold down the SHIFT key while inserting the disc, thus not activating Windows' AutoPlay feature.  Then, you should just be able to click on the CD drive, and then it will look up YADB.

Ripped 48 tracks from tape today.

Unable to manually update tags. MC hangs when updating tags box opens saying updating 1 of 48.

Tried several times with same result every time.
