Somewhat OT - Zone Alarm
« on: January 09, 2003, 06:13:35 am »

???I'm running MC 9.0.88 on my home and office computers. I've also installed Zone Alarm at home and selected pass-lock for all MC applications.

No problem at home connecting to my library through the Net with ZA open. However, it blocks me when I try to connect remotely through the office/client.

Closing ZA out (not uninstalling it) takes care of the problem. I'd prefer to be able to run it 24/7 however.

After some initial problems, I was able to access the server in MJ 8x, even with ZA open.

Has anyone else encountered this? I recently installed the latest ZA release, and that's when the trouble started, so suspect it's a glitch there but just don't know.

System info for client:

Unfortunately, I don't have a direct answer to your problem.  However, I continuously ran into issues with Zone Alarm on XP and, about six months ago or so, replaced it with Sygate Personal Firewall.  It's more technical, which I like, and seems to be more "transparent" than Zone Alarm was.

Make sure that whatever port that MJ 8x server uses is open for all in your firewall rules.

I have been using ZA for 2 years without problems, to include with Media Server.

I currenty am using the newest version, but have not used Media Server for 2 months, but it was working fine.

King:

Are you running XP?  Can't remember.

For that matter, can't remember much of anything, and what I can I'd usually rather forget.

There are a lot of opinions out there, but, I too, am a Sygate convert.  I was using ZAP, but it caused too many problems when I upgraded to XP - the most significant of which was it's inability to work well with Windows Messenger.  I spent lots of time trying to get it to pass traffic by playing with the ports, but no luck.

Sygate Personal Firewall Pro worked "out of the box" and has been real solid.

Just my two cents (maybe worth less!)

Here's another free firewall:

http://www.kerio.com/us/kpf_home.html

I'm on Win98se and was running the newest ZA.  I switched to Kerio cuz I didn't like the new ZA interface.  The whole thing just seemed kinda "heavy".  I then read about Sygate and was using that for awhile, but it seemed to cause a lot of crashes while I was surfing.  I've gone back to Kerio and everything seems a lot more stable.

Not sure.
I like very much ZoneAlarm .
But with the last one ,look like i have some problems.
But if you close the Windows ports ,do you really need a firewall?

Yes, it's what I recommand to my customers as well.  Norton Internet Security (or NIS for short) isn't the greatest, but thats because they add family features, like child surfing restructions and etc (i'd just use MSN8 for that). Norton Personal Firewall is the stand alone firewall program, and what I recommand getting.

So KingSparta, to answer your question, Yes, it really works better then any other firewall I have ever tested.

Features are great, tech support is wonderful, and it never crashes, hangs or dismembers my PC or OS.

if you have any other ?'s about it let me know.

I had ZoneAlarm on W2K and never had any problems. But since I have the newest Pro version on WXP it frequently blocks the outgoing connection in and out of season. So after reading this post, I might have to try something new!
