"Updating File Info"...24 Hours and counting
« on: January 04, 2003, 07:23:25 pm »

I have 10,000 MP3s, mostly high bitrate, on a mapped network drive.  I installed MC9 over 24 hours ago.  It has been "updating File Info" of my library since then and is only up to 1,063.  At this rate, it will take over a week to get through my library.

This can't be normal ;)

If it matters, one other PC shares this library location (but only brought in 107 files).

Thanks

You're right, this is not normal. I have players on two other machines, besides the one the MP3s are on (I'm close to 20 000 now), and an update usually takes about one hour. I think you'll need to trash the old library and let MC9 import the files instead of trying to upgrade. I had lockups as well when I tried that, but luckily I have everything of my info in the tags, so I can just re-import without loosing anything.  8)

if you open up the Task manager in windows, how many MediA Jukebox's Are Running?

What Program Is Using All The CPU Time?

...Only one instance of MC running.  CPU @ 6%.  Nothing else running.

The problem is, this is the first thing MC asks to do BEFORE it will open the first time.  Thus, I am stuck in update hell ;)

Thanks

PS  the mapped network drive where I keep my downloads MP3 and some video, is not organized...just raw downloads.  I have not updated tags, etc...just raw downloads (which do play fine).

you can by Pass The Prompt.

Anyway, You Can Terminate MC If you wish.

Worse Case would be that the Library file may be damaged.

Is it possible that the network connection is really slow for some reason?

If you have MP3's that are VBR with no seek headers (normally made with MusicMatch) it's slower to analyze, but still shouldn't take that long.  I can import my 3000+ APE files in a few minutes over my network...

Let us know what you figure out.

I can end task, but do not know how to bypass the "update library" on first startup of MC.

I think I should completely remove and reinstall MC and Prior MJ files/folders.  Other than use uninstall, and delete any library folders (as my actual music is on a different drive), is there anything else I should do?...any registry files, etc to remove (I am not an expert at registry stuff, so step-by-step would be helpful :))

I might as well also copy all my misic to another drive, both as a back up and to see if there is any issue with the present location.

I have no problem with network speed, etc, and regularly play DVDs over the network.

Thanks

...thanks, but I meant, is there any thing else I should do to completely uninstall ALL MJ/MC files on my PC and start fresh.

I understood what you meant, and answered it.

I would not worry about anything else.
