Unable to burn my CD in 2003- please help!
« on: January 02, 2003, 10:50:31 am »

This is my 3rd new posting about the same topic of not being able to burn a CD through Media Center 9.0.  I can burn through my Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4.05, but it would be nice to do it "all in one" with Media Center.  Also, I'm not sure if Media Center burns better than Adaptec.  I'm sure it's just a setting problem, but I'm looking for some help on this through the moderators/tech support folks of this list!

Thanks,

jasonod ? ?

Yes, I am currently getting the error message "Can't start the write".  I posted my system info the other day to someone's reply; here it is again:

Looks like MC does not see a burner, you only have a ripper drive listed.

Did you Ever Try To Install External Adaptec ASPI?

There is a link in the burner help FAQ

Uncompress the file you get from that link then go to c:\Adaptec where it uncompresses to and run the install file. then go into mj and turn off internal ASPI

Did you read the Burner FAQ?

try the external ASPI and see what happens.

Okay, I did what you told me (Uncompressed and ran the install file in c:\Adaptec,  then I went into mj and turn off internal ASPI.  Here is the error message I received this time:

"write command failed on device 1:1:0.  Unexpected ASPI error (04h 00h 00h).  Now what?

well did the drive show up on the system info? If not not much left

Did you try with out The generic burner?

9.0.89 does not have the goldenhawk burner but 9.0.88 does. it does require ASPI to be working correctly.

There is also a utility in that dir to tell you if the ASPI is installed correctly, maybe run it and see what it tells you.

Maybe JohnT from J River Can Help

It maybe that MC is not seeing your burner for some reason.

Here is the latest system info, so the drive is showing up:

Media Jukebox  9.0.88 -- C:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox\

Microsoft Windows XP  Workstation 5.1 Service Pack 1 (Build 2600)
Intel Pentium III 996 MHz MMX / Memory: Total - 130 MB, Free - 18 MB

Internet Explorer: 6.0.2800.1106 / ComCtl32.dll: 6.00.2800.1106 / Shlwapi.dll: 6.00.2800.1106
Shell32.dll: 6.00.2800.1145 / wnaspi32.dll: Internal ASPI Layer

Ripping /   Drive D:   Copy mode:ModeBurstBigBuffer   CD Type:Auto   Read speed:Max
 Drive E:   Copy mode:ModeBurstBigBuffer   CD Type:Auto   Read speed:Max
Digital playback: No /  Use YADB: Yes /  Get cover art: No /  Calc replay gain: No /  Copy volume: 32767
Eject after ripping: Yes /  Play sound after ripping: No

Burning /  Drive E: IDE-CD R/RW 8X4X32   Addr: 1:1:0  Speed:8  MaxSpeed:8  Lib:2  GHS:1  Use MJ Engine:No
Test mode: No /  Eject after writing: Yes /  Direct decoding: Yes /  Two second gap: No /  Write CD-Text: Yes
Use playback settings: Yes /  Normalization: 90 %

I am not using the generic burner; ASPI check does show that I've installed everything and it's working correctly.  Does John T from J River read these posts?  I am at a loss.

Yes, he may be on vacation due to the season, not sure

Me too, other than the fact your Burner is rather Old and the name is not showing up. it is being displayed as a generic drive

you may want to invest in a 48x anyway. i remember i had a 4x it took like an hour to burn a disk. i currently have a 40x and like 3 mins later it's done

by the way make sure you Check Test Mode so you don't waist disks untill you get this fixed and works in test mode correctly.

Well, I'm bummed that I paid for this program and it won't do everything it's purported to do.  Before I go out and spend $$$ to buy a spankin' new CD burner, without even knowing for sure if it will fix the problem, I hope that John T reads my posts and has some other suggestions.  It's got to be a "Setttings" problem.  I don't know why it wouldn't be.  Has this ever happened before with other users?  Can you again go through every possible settings scenario and offer other suggestions??

Thanks,

jasonod

Just an idea : does your burner support CD-Text writing ?  -  Did you try to burn with CD-Text turned off ?

It looks like you're still using the internal Aspi. Make sure you have "Use internal Aspi" unchecked on the cd writer settings page and restart MJ. Then check your system info and it should show an Adaptec filename for the aspi information, not "internal aspi". Then try a burn. Goldenhawk has the problem you are seeing sometimes with the internal aspi activated with some burners. Activating the Adaptec aspi should resolve your problem.
You have a Philips burner which is not quite working with our new internal burning engine, but should be real soon now. Actually, it would work fine for data disks, but it uses an older method of doing DAO for audio disks.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.  I finally got it to work; I knew it must have been a "settings" problem.  You must understand, I am a little slow at these things sometimes.  Thanks for your patience!

Curious: is there any sound quality difference b/w burning a disc with Media Jukebox versus Adaptec Easy CD Creator?

Finally, what is your opinion of DFX?  I have 10 days left in my trial version, and was considering purchasing it.  I notice it doesn't make a difference in the sound quality with burned CDs, only mp3 files already on my hard drive.  Do you recommend it (or another software program like it) :D?

Hi Jasonod,

Glad that you have your burner sorted out.  I notice you ask for opinion about DFX.

MC9 already has music enhancement features.

When I started with MP3 ripping, the encoding was not of very high quality, and DFX was very good at filling the MP3 sound gap.  The enhancement makes MP3 sound much more natural.

Today, the encoder provided by MC is very good, and we can select High quality encoding, and use Var Bit rate.  The combination allow MC to rip very high quality MP3 files.

I believe there are also other very good encoders supported by MC.

Hence, my view is that the encoding quality has improved, and the absense of HiFi in MP3 is no longer an issue.  Hence, I also do not use DFX any longer.

If music quality is important, then patience in choosing a high quality encoding (takes a longer time to encode) and also using much better bit rates, like Var Bit rate or 320K bit rate, the music quality will improve much better.

Apart from S/W encoding, the sound card is also important, and many new sound cards are very impressive.  Personally, I use the Creative Extigy.

If your interest is to have music enhancement, I notice that MC already support them under DSP Studio.  But when I was using DFX, their features are also interesting.  But these are just sound enhancements which can be fun to use.  If you like them, certainly DFX will be a credible choice.

Again, please pardon my ignorance.  So, are you saying that I don't need DFX?  Does my version of Media Center 9.0 do a well-enough job?  And, I am also getting offers popping up to get the latest upgrade of Media Center 9.0.  I thought I have the latest version?

Thanks again,

jasonod

Some People Like It It Is Sold By Another Company J River Does Not Sell It.

I Don't Thing It Is Needed DSP included with Media Jukebox And Media Center Does A Good Job Without Paying Someone Another $19.95 or what Ever DFX is selling for. I owned it when i used Music Match. I thought it was a waist of my money.

Stick With 9.0.88 untill monday when matt said Quote: "Hell Or High Water I Will Have A New Build Out"
