Multiple artists
« on: November 20, 2002, 08:59:29 am »

Sorry if this is similar to the "featured artists posted, but i think its different so i'll give it a shot:

Is there a way to tag a song or album with multiple (not featured) artists.

lets say you take the album "On the Sunny Side of the Street" by Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie.  Is there a way to put both artists in two separate listings, that way the album could by listed under each artist separately when browsing by artist?

Or take a single song on an album perhaps and just that song is by two artists.  Can the same thing be done?

If having duplicates listed when the entire media library is being viewed is a worry, maybe one of the artist fields could be made dominant and then if people wanted an option could be turned on or off to remove duplicate listings when viewing the media library.  Then the song/album would only be listed by the dominant field.

Maybe this was discussed in the multiple genre thread, but I don't see how this problem could be solved with different playlists.

If this cannot be done can this feature be incorporated in MJ9?  If not thanks for the thoughts.

Hi

Yup, the "Featured artist" thread was mine, and this is pretty much what I want too. I guess what I want is to be able to use similar syntax to WMP 9 for Artist, eg:

Artist = "Santana; Michelle Branch"

Then, under the "Album artist (auto)/Album" scheme I want to see something like:

+ Album artist (auto)/Album
...+ Michelle Branch
......+ The Spirit Room
......    (with other artist)    ["Game of Love" in list]
  ...
...+ Santana
......+ Shaman    ["Game of Love" in list]

This would use the fact that Santana is the album artist, not Branch,  because his name is first in the Artist field, and all other tracks in the same directory have Santana as the first or only artist.

The other case is if the album is a compilation. Using this example, say "Game of Love" was ripped from "Hits 2002" not "Shaman". Then, under "Artist/Album" you'd see:

+ Artist/Album
...+ Michelle Branch
......+ Hits 2002
......   The Spirit Room
...+ Santana
......+ Hits 2002
......   Supernatural

Again MJ would use the same algorithm as present to determine that the album is a compilation, ie that Santana (the first artist listed) is not the first or only artist on every other track in the same directory as this track.

Who else thinks this could be useful?

You know A plug-in can be made to do this.

I will look into adding it to Gonkulator Plug-In this weekend, But it may need to wait until the MJ9 SDK comes out.

If you can give me some samples i can make the program to look for the format.
