Music:  Analyzed.  So now what?
« on: November 18, 2002, 06:56:51 pm »

On the hypothetical,

I've read some websites (tried to, at least) about what the whole analysis thing is and what it does, but I don't get it at all.

So I went to the analysis sensei, and I said to him,  "Sensei, teach me about audio analysis."

"What do you wish to know?"

And so I said to him, "What do I DO with this information?  How do I use it?"

And also, "I'd like plain english definitions for all the different data, what's good, what's bad, and why."

And finally, "I'd like real-world examples of how this effects me and my listening pleasures.  Can I use this data?  To do what?  How?"

And the sensei said...

<Sensei mode>Kurt, I believe the data is used to allow you to play all of your music at the same volume regardeless of the volume it was recorded at.  It uses the info so that the file itself is not changed...</Sensei mode>

Hope this is correct and answers your question ;D

Adam, what your talking about is the Replay gain and yes, that's what it does. It analyses your music and then tries to play all the files that have been analysed at one constant level so you dont get huge volume jumps between different tracks.

MJ does this automatically?  I don't need to use a separate tool and manually normalize my music?

select file, right click, Tools, Analyze

When Your Playing Make Sure In The DSP Studio Real Play Gain Is Turned On.

then when the file is played On MJ it will play at a normal Vol when going from song to song.

if you wish to burn a CD to play on your stereo, you need to use normalize. normalize may add some background noise (per the help file) i never noticed any noise.

You now also get BPM (beats per minute/tempo) and Intensity calculated by the analyze feature. These values will allow you to create view schemes or smartlists based on those properties so you can, for example, queue up fast tempo, medium intensity tracks by a specific artist.
