New image-and-details view?
« on: November 03, 2002, 04:52:40 am »

Hi JRiver,
Would it be possible for you to create a new view type that combines the "Details" view with the cover art/image view?  What I am looking for is basically just to add an "Image" column to the existing "Details" view.  It would show a small thumbnail of either the cover art (music files) or the image itself (if an image or video file).  I made a mock-up of what this could look like:

ImageArtistAlbumNameGenre
Alice In ChainsDirtThem BonesRock
Alice In ChainsDirtDam That RiverRock

What do you think?
Also, if anyone else likes this, or if anyone has ideas to make this view better, let's hear it!

Album View does this but unfortunately you have to be running v8 to use it.

Any thoughts from JRiver folks?  Would this be potentially an easy addition?

If you want a better idea of what it would look like, go to Amazon and do a search for a band, Megadeth for example.  Then click on the "See all 33 results" under Popular Music.  See how the album art is on the left and then the details are set to the right?  Making the Details view in MJ appear similar to this could help newer users...

Anyone else with yea/nay votes or improvements?

Looks nice.

However, is that better, or a "Tiles" type mode like XP has.   With that, there aren't columns... just little icons and text next to it that's customizable.  That way, you can get more items on the screen at a time. (but sorting is tougher)

Let us know...

I like the tiles view in XP and think it is very clean, however like you say there are difficulties with sorting.  A view like this seems to be the best of both worlds concerning displaying covers and data.  At the moment the cover view is nice but doesn't show data and vice versa for the data view.

Hope this helps...

I agree with NoCodeUK - I never use the "Tiles" view in XP because of the sorting issue.  Any time when I am looking for something and I have to side-to-side as well as down, I get annoyed.  I would rather have things in columns so I can choose one column to look at, and then scan down.

I'd like to see a Tile type view, where the text displayed is the track list.

Plus I also like all of the other suggestions that have been posted in this thread.

If the tiles view was implemented in place of, or as an option for the current view cover art and the image field and thumbnail was added to the existing data details view I think we could have the best of all worlds 8)

I would like the Tiles view with track list as well....

And, as NoCodeUK says, both would be great!!

Taking my cue from explorer in XP, how about this?

The toggle list style button is a drop down with the following options:

Thumbnails: one pic per album, as currently
Tiles: one pic tile per track like XP, grouped by album with an album title heading (like if you right click Arrange Icons by/show in groups in XP explorer)
Icons: one pic per track, as currently
List: this is Swordsmans image-and-details view
Details: the standard MJ view without thumbnails.

This is as close as I can get to XP functionality, and I think covers all the suggestions so far. Plus it will be familiar to new users of MJ with XP.

I like it.. except for this one:

I just think that every line having an image next to it could look really cluttered. It would be better if, along with the Album title header, you had the image there, and then just a line for each track.

Hmmm. I hadnt thought of that. Either would work for me, although I think my suggestion is more 'tile-like' in an XP sense. Just to be clear, heres what I meant (imagine the icons as thumbnails, and properly titled track names):

Doof, I like your idea. I hesitate to suggest we could have both...

I'd like a cover-art view like musicmatch with one-thumbnail-per-album. Ideally also show the album title and artist, possibly clickable like shortcuts to the relevant nodes in the Artist/Album view scheme. Hover mouse over artwork to show a tooltip with track listing, double-click artwork to play each album track in sequence. Free alcohol and loose women.

You can do it right now: CTRL-U twice (starting from the raw style list).

Thanks for the tip! I'll try it tonight!

BTW is there some sort of quick reference for these sort of things? I'm very new to MJ but happy to experiment. I'd like to wise up to all its capabilities quite quickly though. I'm interested in its media management and playback features, less so with CD burning and editing. Sorry if I'm throwing us off-topic.

Would it be possible to customise the "tile" display (in Options) to show the thumbnail and a customised list of properties? Then you can also set your sort criteria there...

Just my 2c.
