Suggestion: Sorting views...simple!
« on: November 06, 2002, 10:47:30 pm »

I saw Doof posted some input for how to implement sorting options for MJ9. I'll just say: Dump the options all together!

Try this:
- Open an explorer window. Go to a folder with files and folders in it. Set it to show details.

- Sort the files how you like it by clicking the columns. Close the window.

- Open a new explorer window and navigate to your previous folder. The files/folders are still sorted the way you wanted!

See? It couldn't be easier! Why fiddle with some confusing options when you can do it like that? And the beauty of it? In windows it works for ALL folders, with different sorting on different folders!

I requested this in MJ8, let's get it in MJ9 and welcome to year 2002 :)

Marty3d: probably a good idea for many people, but it requires that you display columns for each property that you use to sort, and that you don't mind it remembering your sort order. I like sort memory for basic file navigation, but I would not like it in MJ. And I don't have room for more columns  :P Even if I did, I would have to click three columns to return the sorting order to the way I usually like to see my files, and I'm far too lazy for that  :D

The other thing, too, is that you can do a Random sort, so that we can finally have randomly sorted smartlists.

And like phelt mentioned, you can currently sort by a field that's not even being displayed.

So while I agree that we need some sort of independent, persistant sorting\column display, I'm not sure that that would be enough.

So is it possible to sort a view scheme using a field that is not part of it???  Could I sort a view scheme by Track No for example even though Track Number is not displayed??  This is the one thing that is really bugging me at the moment.  I wanna sort my videos by episode number which i store in the track # field...at the moment they are always sorted by alphabetical order.  It drives me mad.  The view scheme is Album/Sub Album/Name so for example it displays Simpsons/Series 1/Bart The General etc. but it is aplhabetized...Can it be sorted on Track #??

Cheers

We'll add some sticky-view type stuff in MJ 9.

Not that it matters, but I can't stand the remembering that Explorer does.  I get everything set the way I want it, and then when I go to the next folder, all of the sudden I'm looking at huge icons or some other stupid thing...

That's why the option to make all folders like the current one is nice.

Personally, I'm not looking for a sticky view on a View Scheme by View Scheme basis, or album by album, etc. Like, I don't care that Rush - Moving Picture have a different look than Metallica - Master of Puppets.

I'm mostly interested in being able to say "For this View Scheme Group, only display these columns." So like the Image View Scheme Group doesn't show me stuff like Bitrate, BPM, Replay Gain, and Lyrics. But then the Audio Group shouldn't show me width and height, either.

I'd also like to have a more detailed listing in View Schemes than I do in Playing Now. For Playing Now, all I really want is Name, Artist, Duration... maybe a couple of others. While in Media Library I want to be able to see all the nitty gritty. And I'd also like to have the columns in slightly different orders. So like for Playing Now, I'd want Artist | Name | Duration but in Media Library I want Name | Artist | Album | Track #, etc.

Definitely gets my vote!!  I have proposed this before.  It thought it had been introed a couple of builds ago but seems to have gone again (I may have been imagining it ;D)  To be able to have seperate view scheme group views would be great tho...

Please...

Matt: I don't know/remember about other Windows versions, but in Win2K you can set up a dir the way you want (right-click on the columns, choose sort, etc) in Windows Explorer, then go to Tools>Folder Options>View and make all folders like the one you just customized. In that same dialog you can define whether settings are global or if each folder should have its own scheme. I choose the latter so I can still make Control Panel and some others use large icons, and I sort some folders differently, but you should be able to make it obey  :)
