Upgrading from MJ8: some problems

It works fine for me.  If anyone thinks it isn't please start a new thread.  It's possible there are some things we've missed.

Before all I have to say the upgrade runs well, I mean I can browse and play my converted db. But custom fields are lost (or have a strange behaviour), "inside" cover art are lost also.

Please check these posts:

If they were not clear (thanks to my fluent english...) please say me the truth, I will survive... and I will try to explain better  ;)

I am ready to test any other upgrade procedure since I dedicated my laptop to test MJ9 (with a copy of a subset of my tracks) when I continue using MJ8 on my desktop.

Try installing the latest build, and replace the library with your MJ 8 library.

Then let MJ 9 do the full upgrade -- it's important to let it finish as it goes through file by file.

There was an internal cover art fix in this last build.  Custom fields work for me, but if they still don't work after a fresh upgrade with the latest MJ 9, just let us know.

Thanks Michel and sorry for any hassles.

Don't worry Matt. I already used released software not so stable than your preview.

Ok, I will do what you suggested and I let you know.

The next build will add "Update Tags (from library)" and "Update Library (from tags)" to the file property tools menu.  This should allow us to further pinpoint any problems...

I did the following:

-I removed MJ9 from my laptop (I uninstalled the application and I removed MJ folder).

-I installed MJ8.388 and I registered it.

-I copied 50 files from my destop to my laptop. They are mpc, ogg and mp3 files most of them with cover art inside (all but mpc files) and custom1, custom2 tags filled. All mp3 have id3-v2 and no id3-v1.

-I run MJ8 and before to import anything I set mp3 plugin to remove id3-V1 if existing and create id3-v2 if not existing.

-I imported my files into MJ8. I checked them; all ok except mpc files lost custom1 and custom2 as these fields are not written in APE 1.0 tags.

WinVorbis gives me the following:
MJMETADA=<MPL Version="1.0"> <Item> <ExInfo Custom1="cd"
Custom2="Psychedelic Pop, Baroque Pop, Pop/Rock, Soft Rock, Adult
Contemporary, Disco" ReplayGain="1|0|-1|0|0|" Rating="0"/> </Item>
</MPL>

so you can check at least ogg files have custom1 and custom2 tags inside the files.

-I exited MJ8 and I installed MJ9. I answered 'yes' to upgrade.

I got the following : all columns are displayed:
.../width/height/empty

within this column without title MJ displays my custom2 fields. There is no custom1 field column.

If I try to give a name ("style" for example) to the "empty title" column through Tree & View settings (the last line of the list which is blank) then the column title continues empty but all contents become "N/a" !

cover art: it is fixed, I got them into MJ9.

I think MJ wasn't happy because some of your custom fields had empty strings for names.

If you don't mind, try again next build and let us know if we've fixed it.

Thanks Michel.

I never renamed my custom fields (I let them to their default name "custom1, custom2,..."). I don't understand what you mean.

I will wait the next build to try again.

Well, I'm guessing because everything works when I try...

If it doesn't work after next build, send me the version 8 mediafiles.jmd file to play with. ( matt @ jriver.com )

Thanks for everything Michel.

More (may be important) informations about this problem of MJ8 custom tags:

If I delete a track from the MJ9 library (without deletint the file) and then I import it, the custom2 field is displayed empty.

(when I upgraded from MJ8, MJ9 was able to display custom2 field for this track).

You could deduce that custom2 is not in the file but it is false:

<MPL Version="1.0">
<Item>
<ExInfo Custom1="cd" Custom2="Psychedelic Pop, Baroque Pop, Pop/Rock, Soft Rock, Adult Contemporary, Disco" ReplayGain="1|0|-1|0|0|" Rating="0"/>
</Item>
</MPL>

(it is an ogg file, but I have the same behaviour with a mp3 file)

MJ9 seems able to import custom2 fields (not custom1 fields though) upgrading MJ8 db but not importing a file with custom2 field tagged by MJ8.

Hope that helps.
