Media Jukebox Crashes when I play a Playlist
« on: December 31, 2002, 12:53:11 pm »

:'(
I just purchased the Media Jukebox ver. 9 program about 30 minutes ago and installed it on my computer.   I let the Media Jukebox search my drives for files, then clicked on "Playlists" and selected an .mp3 file to play.

I got an error box stating "Media Core has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience".

It had more text like..."Please tell Microsoft about this problem.  I went ahead and "sent" the error report.  Once I send the report, Media Jukebox window just closes.  I have tried to play different playlists on three seperate occasions with the same results.

I have a Dell Pentium IV, 256mb RAM, lots of empty disk space, and am running WindowsXP Professional.

Please help!

you should make sure you have the latest version MC 9 What Version Build?

Goto Help in MC, and Go to system Info and copy that to the clip board and paste it in a message. I am hoping tonight there will be a new Build Matt has been working on for the last 3 years.

thats a bunch of crap Microsoft Put in Windows they do nothing with that info, it's a waist of time and you can turn it off.

The Crash part prob is a bug in Media Center (Not Media Jukebox).

I encountered the same problem in Media Center - v9.0.88.  It appeared when I would PAUSE or STOP a playlist and then attempt to PLAY it again.  Restarted WinXP and still occurred.  Error did not exist in version 9.0.86.  However, there is a similar issue in Build 86 where after several hours of using Media Center pressing PAUSE will cause a string of strange playback errors when you press the PLAY button -- Note: This will not occur if you press the STOP button, only with the PAUSE action.

I do some ripping at 320Kbps MP3, download cover art, review ripped music then repeat the process.  If I leave for a few minutes and select PAUSE the above will occur (version 86).  I don't recall this occurring in any previous versions (8 or 9).

I have the latest build of Media Center 9.0.88.  Mine crashes after starting the program and trying to play any mp3 file.

I so happy I paid for this.  I guess I will have to have my credit card company refuse the charge since I'm not paying for a product from a company that has such poor quality control.

I guess it is back to Music Match Jukebox.  At least it plays files.

Many thought are going thru my head right now but them aside.

if it is because your in Playing now when playing or switching to it.

if you set MC up to play and stay in Media Library it works fine.

there was a bug in 9.0.87 or 9.0.88, i think 9.0.89 fixed it but that version was pulled due to a unrelated problem

i have 9.0.88 and works fine like i said if i stay in Media Library when playing.

i think this was due to the template or visuals.

if you go to playing now an you move the visual box all the way to the top it may fix the crashing.

Music Match Has it's own problems

I don't understand, play but stay in Media Library?  I can try and just play a single file in the Media Library and the song plays for maybe three seconds then the program crashes.

I would think at a minimum I should be able to play a file regardless of location in the program.

I also don't understand "play and stay in Media Library".  I just double-clicking on an MP3 file in the Media Library and having the program crash.  I'm not sure what else I could do

on the left side

Playing Now
Media Library

if you go to Media Library you can click on a file and play it. you can set this and it may be setup when you click on a file and play it MC will go to Playing Now. when MC does that it crashes (Small bug)

If you go to playing now and move the visual window all the way to the top. this may help.

in "Tools", Options, the settings, General Make Sure Jump To Is Set To "None"

Project...did you miss the "Media Center 9.0, formerly Media Jukebox 9.0, is in beta testing now" statement when you downloaded?

If you don't have the patience to try and fix the problem then roll back to v8. Go back to v9 when it has a few more builds under the belt.

By the way if that does not help I am not sure what might help.

BETA means somethings don't work correctly, so there may be some problems but they will be fixed soon. so please hang in there J river will get it fixed.

You guys are probably right about the "beta" part.  I don't have Media Jukebox 8 and I wrongly assumed if a company is charging for software, even "beta" it must work 99% correctly.

I have project managed large software development projects and "beta" is supposed to mean it is ready for user acceptance testing.  It should be an embaressment to the development team for major bugs to be discovered in the "beta" phase.  It shows sloppy QA, and general disregard for the user community.

"Beta" doesn't and should never mean having the user debug the program.

Just another example of poor quality assurance processes and overall quality control.

Here's the total number of permutations MJ has to work with...

# of processor types * # of operating systems * # of soundcard brands * # of CD-ROM/RW brands * # of interfaces (ie: SCSI, IDE, Firewire, USB) * ...... = infinity

Even though everything mentioned is supposed to comply to certain standards (thereby reducing the permutation numbers), you know as well as I do that even with 99.99% compliance, that 0.01% can add up fast.

With this in mind, go check out the MC9 forum and see if everybody is having to do major debugging.

Yes, that was/is the exact problem.  If visuals are used then this problem exists in Build 9.0.88

BTW, I have been developing computer software for over 20 years and I would rate the efforts of the Media Jukebox/Center team as one of the best.  Frequent updates, adding new features from client/customer feedback, correcting policy errors, etc.   They may not be perfect but if the whole industry performed to this level end-users would be very, very happy.  Stick with this product; I believe you will eventually be very satisfied.
