Any hopes of a mp3pro input plugin?
« on: June 27, 2003, 12:26:22 pm »

Just curious if anyone knows of any plans of a mp3pro plugin for the near future.

well actually smaller files with only a small decrease in quality is what I'm looking for. I also like the ability to store cover art in the file itself. The main reason I'm asking is because I've been using MMJB so all my files are mp3pro, but I don't want to pay 60 bucks for the upgrade. Yeah I know sucks to be me! The files sound great in MMJB, but not in MJ.

Well I've tinkered with the EQ and the DSP settings and I've got them sounding fairly good now. Is there actually a difference in how a mp3pro file is DEcoded vs. a mp3 file, or is it just in the ENcoding?

MP3Pro kind of sucks.   ::)

How about hoping for an AAC plugin?  That way you get smaller files and (at least) MP3 quality.

Use APE!
Monkey's Audio is:
-free,
-it is LossLESS so audio quality is surperb,
-it is lossless so you can transcode to other formats without loss of quality,
-it is FAST!

Yes the files are large, but HDD space is getting cheap
(I paid about 50 cents GB for my two - 200GB drives)

Suggesting APE to someone interested in MP3 Pro is like offering water to a fish.

I was wondering the same thing - looking for great quality in a smaller size.  Media Jukebox claims to support all major formats, but no mp3Pro.  What gives?

Mp3Pro Is not a major format and almost no one supports it in hardware.

So, fish never get thirsty?   ;D
LOL

You are correct, but unless one is going portable HDD space (and thus file size) is becomming a non-issue as costs drop.  That was my point.
Then again I used to be a telemarketer so I was trained to sell you something you don't really want   :P

I'm with iCamp on this one.

Geo Buz: I would recommend you give a try to Ogg. It is smaller than mp3 and unlike mp3PRO I personally find it to sound better (only at a lower bitrate though, like 48-96. The higher the bitrate, the smaller the difference, at least to my ears).

Like mp3PRO it has some drawbacks : this is no major format and only one player support it (and it doesn't really look 'cutting-edge' to me : http://www.neurosaudio.com/index.aspx)

BUT, it's patent-free, if you care about that.

As for AAC, does it really sound that good? Is it really that small? These are not rhetorical questions, I'm genuinely asking.

Ogg is a good suggestion for anyone looking for slightly smaller file sizes.  I also agree that Ogg can outperform MP3.

AAC is, IMO, very similar to Ogg.  The file sizes are, however, noticably smaller at the same bit rate.  Performance is very good as well.  It's well on its way to being the next standard and it's a shame no plug-in exists for MC.

If you want something that is smaller then mp3 and sounds the same or better why not wma?

OK. Then you have to tell me how you make your AAC files, because the one I made with the Nero plug-in are not that small and sound REALLY bad. I think I must do something wrong  :-[

Just gave it a try. Sounds pretty good to me. Still, I find ogg to sound slightly better and ogg files are also smaller than wma at same bitrate. In both areas the difference is not such that wma should be ruled out though, especially if one considers that it definitely is now a major format (my I-River cd player can play wma, great!)

You don't have to be sorry, I'm the one who's sorry that I can't use iTunes. Only a few weeks before we can give it a try, or so they say....

Good point.  It'll be neat to see it on Windows.

Just made my first mp4s with Nero. Used the Winamp in_mp4.dll to play them in MC. Well... about 20% smaller than my ogg and the sound... just kick ass!

Now Nero is a pain to use to encode files and the mp4 encoder plugin is a limited trial. JRiver has to come up with something here. I understand that they would have to charge for an encoder plug-in. I've also seen that there were people working on developing windows aac standalone encoders. A German company plans on charging 20¤ for its soon to be released encoder. Seems like a reasonable price to me after having heard what Nero does...

Finally a few questions: how is mp4 different from aac?
Can an iPod play mp4 files as such, or do the files need to be renamed to aac first? If so, could MC transfer and rename mp4 onto an iPod all at the same time.

Sorry if the questions sound dumb, but I'm a little lost here.  :-[
