 Why does MJ8 analize and normalize the volume playback relative to 83db??  Doesn't this cause a much softer playback relative to most files which haven't been MJ analyzed??  Doesn't this method force us to analyze ALL of our music if we choose to use it?  (... It seems to me "most" files would playback relative to 89db(?) ...)

 ... Naturally, this would beg the questions  ... is there a way to change the 83db value?  Is there another tool which could write MJ8 compatible tags relative to 89db?  Also ... does VorbisGain write a MJ compatible tag?  (note ... I wish to write a tag rather than change the data)

IIRC, the original ReplayGain spec was based on research and decisions from the movie industry, who decided that 83db should be their target. Based on user feedback and consultation with the developer of the ReplayGain spec, most developers of music-related ReplayGain utilities have "standardized" on 89db. Whether MJ/MC will change - Matt will probably have to answer that.

MP3Gain can change it to any value you want. However, this should be tested on a few files first. It is permanent when done this way. Do a search with Google and it shouldn't be a problem to find.

 Would "most music related utilities" also include encoders (e.g., LAME, FHG, OGG ...)?

MP3Gain & WavGain both modify data (and use 89 dB).
VorbisGain (@ 89 dB) & MJ (@ 83 dB) use tags but not the same one's, of course. MJ v8 won't read VG tags, but v9 was supposed to handle RG better (like Radio/Album gain support, and support for other RG methods)

 Naturally I would put in a vote for MJ8 to incorporate these changes (including OGG support) ... and add an option for the 83 vs 89 gain setting (... that is, whenever I want to change a gain setting for a specific tune, it seems, 9 times out of 10, I want to increase its gain (relative), not decrease it ...)

WavGain is best solution (though as mentioned, it does modify data). Then any format you encode to afterwards is RG'd, thus eliminating need for RG support on player end.
