"Tagging mode"... how to show all options?
« on: October 14, 2003, 07:28:07 am »

Hi,

When in "tagging mode"... is there any way to make ALL the options or entries of a field to become available with its checkboxes?

For instance, when in "tagging mode" inside a playlist I cannot chose from Genres that have not tracks previously assigned on thay playlist and I don't find how to show ALL genres.

Thank you.

I thought this was fixed at one time. Maybe the bug came back?

After some thinkin', the field has to be a part of the scheme.

ex: If you have a scheme called Artist/Genre/Album and click on an Artist, then in tagging mode it would refill the Genre column with all available genres.

It's like the entry has to be a part of the scheme in order to show. Does that make sense?

It may be too much work to figure out the genres if they're not a part of the scheme already.

That's correct, Dragyn. The field belongs to the view scheme.

In your first example, I only get ratings 4 & 5 and 1, 2 & 3 don't seem to show up... or at least I don't know how to make'em show up!

In your second example Artist/Genre/Album... I can't assign the right Genre 'cause I only see the ones that already have some tracks assigned to them. If there is no "blues" track in the playlist, the entry "blues" will not show up as assignable. It will only show up when working with the whole library or when there is at least one "blues" track in the playlist.

Hope it's more clear now.

Thanks for your time.

Well I think you're right, the missing genres/rating/whatever should show when in tagging mode regardless of what's shown already. It would just make things easier.

The tagging mode list is filtered based on the view scheme rule(s).  That way, music artists aren't listed in image views and vice-a-versa.

Is that the problem, or is there something else happening?

Thanks!

Matt,

This is my problem:

I import 6 new albums into MC and want to tag all the tracks, filling the genre. What I do now is:

1.- I have a view scheme name "tagging" that is fed with my "recently imported" playlist. The view scheme has all the required fields, ie. genre/album artist (auto)/artist/rating/ etc.

2.- I press F4 to get to tagging mode.

3.- I select the first album to tag. I need to assign the following criteria: Genre = Folk - Contemporary; Album Artist = Compilations - Folk; Rating = 4

4.- The panes are now populated with all the available options with their relative check-boxes.... but, in the Genre column I only have "Blues" and neither one of the other genres is showing up (though they exist). The Album Artist column shows nothing and the Rating column shows nothing too.

This is because it seems that "tagging mode" does not show all the available "genres", "album artist" and "ratings" available in the library but only the ones that already have a file assigned in the precise playlist you're working with.

Perhaps there is a better way to achieve what I need. I just want to tag my new albums and have all the options available for each field... i.e., all the genres, all the ratings, etc. I cannot work with the whole library cause it's a 60.000 tracks library and it's impossible to find which are the new albums unless I use a view scheme fed with the "recently imported" or "imported today" playlists.

Thanks again for any suggestion.

I think filtering based on the view scheme rule solves more problems than it causes, so I don't really want to see it go.  Maybe it could be optional somehow in the next version.

Until then, how about making the view criteria something like [Media Type]=[Audio] ~sort=[Date Imported]-d

That way all the choices will be in the panes, but you'll also have the new tracks at the top of the list.

Thanks Deivit.

Matt,

I think your suggestion will work great. I'm gonna give it a try tonight at home. Thank you very much  :)

I'm only worried because tagging mode is very slow working with the whole library in large libraries like mine (60.000 tracks) even thoguh I have a Pentium IV 2.5 and 1 GB of memory. This is why I wanted to work only with a small portion of it.

Thanks again for your help, Matt.

If you can isolate things that seem overly slow, please start a thread on it and we'll dig a little.

It may be that a certain pane is taking most of the time.  Removing one-by-one might lend some clues.

Thanks.
