MC9.1, iTunes, AAC, and Audible.
« on: October 17, 2003, 02:53:52 am »

I'm just wondering what the official position is on the status of "better" Audible support and AAC capability in MC9.1.  I like MC9.1, but I definitely find the whole Audible import procedure quite tedious, and I would very much like AAC support.  I have to admit that iTunes looks rather tempting in this regard.  From what I've read, it will soon have seamless Audible support, and it already has AAC support.

On one hand I would like to continue to support MC due to their obvious interest in making this a better product and their quick and frequent updates (much appreciated), but on the other hand I can't help finding myself finding drawn to some of the iTunes features that aren't currently supported with MC9.1.

Thanks for any feedback on this,

Larry

My feedback:

Fire up MC9.  Go to the "Playing Now" node.  Think for a second about what "Playing Now" is, what it does, and what it's for.

iTunes doesn't have one of these[/b].  No Playing Now-style feature in iTunes.  I am not kidding.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what MC9 has that iTunes doesn't.  iTunes has some stuff that could definitely inspire some changes in MC9, but... well...

...let's just say that those folks who were thinking that MC9 was going to actually be iTunes for Windows were giving iTunes for Windows a lot of credit.

I agree with this assessment.  MC 9.1 Rocks compared to Itunes. MC 9.1 is just the whole package.  I am going back to MC after using iTunes after I discovered itunes keeps the long filenames of the mp3s and I think it was causing problems.  If MC9 can get AAC fully integrated, then it will rock.  Also do the new dynamic playlists work with MC9?

Larry,

In regards to improved Audible support in MC, this may change in the future with some cooperation from Audible. We are working towards this.  I think the only additional feature you are after is auto import of Audible files?

Any chance of using quicktime to play ACC files?

Even playing non-DRM files would be cool.  And if it was done by QT, then it might not require much work.

I'm not sure what the proper terminology would be, but with iTunes, you can (or soon will be able to) purchase Audible content from directly within iTunes -- i.e. no need for the highly annoying Audible Manager.  When you say "auto import of Audible files," what exactly does this mean?  i.e., what would the procedure be?

Also, are there any updates on the AAC issue?

Thanks,

Larry,

By auto import I mean a solution for having to manually import Audible files into MC. Ideally you would not need Audible Manager. That solution will require Audible's assistance. Without that,we could still automate the import of Audible files more than it is now.

No update on AAC, but I will look at this more next week.

Our buddy Steve Jobs seemed to imply their relationship with Audible was "exclusive"...

At this time, it's obviously not "exclusive," since, as we already know, you don't need any apple products to listen to Audible content.  iTunes does, however, offer what they're calling "exclusive content."

One of the problems with current Audible support in MC is the fact that the tags are all wrong when you import Audible files, requiring a bunch of tag editing in order to correct a bunch of fields (album, artist, genre, etc.)
