Q: Renaming from Properties File I/O
« on: October 20, 2003, 02:03:38 pm »

I keep my music library on a linux file server. I decided it was time to spruce up the file organization, so just told MC 9.1.279 to rename all the files from properties. I figured this would be a relatively quick procedure. My library contains about 4500 music files.

However, instead of simply renaming the files as I would expect it to, judging from the bandwidth being used and the time it takes to complete each song, MC seems to be downloading each song from the server, then reuploading it with the new name. This is making it take about 20 seconds per song, which means that for a library of this size, it would take quite a long time to rename. In addition, doing so doesn't keep the original file-modified dates. Can this function be updated so that MC doesn't have to download and reupload 16G of files? Or am I doing something wrong? It should be able to simply rename the files.. there has to be a way..

I am currently upgrading to .281, but didn't see anything in the 'new' notes that would change this behavior.

Thanks,
Jeff

There must be something to how Windows works with your Linux server.

We use the standard Windows file move system.  It must be deciding to copy for some reason.

Any Linux server pros?

Linux file servers usually use Samba, which emulates Windows File Sharing. I guess I'll make sure I'm upgraded and look around to see if there's something in my config that's preventing it from working.

Thanks.
