I can't import anymore
« on: October 18, 2003, 09:16:01 am »

Seems like with the recent betas, I just can't get MC to import anymore. It will just crash everytime. Any directory I try to do. Be it either through the import dialog, my computer, etc.

Anyone else experiencing this?

I think I may have to start over again.

After deleting all my thumbnails, I've noticed MC is faster and there is no HD griding. MC will still crash when importing / showing files in 'My Computer' (large lists).

I've even deleted the library and started over and it still acts funny.

After still trying to redo my library, MC will keep crashing. I just tried it now (tools, import) and it didn't even start getting files and it crashed.

This is what I get every time:

AppName: media jukebox.exe    AppVer: 9.1.281.0    ModName: media jukebox.exe
ModVer: 9.1.281.0    Offset: 001c0f64

I've even went as far as testing my memory and that is OK.

You'll possibly find it's a corrupted file. Try importing one half of your music collection and see how that goes. If it dies, try the other half. If that dies too, then you either have two corrupted files somewhere, or my guess is wrong (statistically speaking, of course, it is possible that there ARE two corrupted files...). Depending on the size of your collection, you may want to import folder by folder?

Incidentally, by "corrupted" it doesn't mean that the file is unplayable, but that MC is having a problem (a severe one at that) reading the file.

I hope that this is of some use to you.

Well see that's the thing. MC will import, play, view, etc all the files if I keep doing it 20 times. It just crashes when it wants to. I know it's gonna crash because the display dialog stops, hd read/writing (I can't tell), crash.

I just did a chkdsk (bad sectors) and now I'm in the process of trying this again.

Just to clear some things up: I'm not importing any audio, just images and video files. No plugins are loaded. Just about every app is closed.

I even did this in safe mode and it didn't crash but it froze the system.

I don't know what's going on anymore.

Here's what I found out:

The hard drive was fine. Still experiencing the crashes. Then I remembered that sometimes when you save jpg's in internet explorer, they would sometimes be renamed as bmps.

Well I'm not sure if this was the fix but I unchecked 'BMP' from the import list and it worked the first time. Maybe MC thought they were in bmps but in fact they were jpgs?

I don't know really. I'm gonna keep importing and see how it goes.

I just want to add..

This still effects 'My Computer' as that it will show all data types. It doesn't filter out what you choose to import or what files are associated with MC.

So far it has crashed once after I did that.

Plus it's not really a good idea that MC could import other data types into the library...like exe's, inf's, etc. Maybe this is an oversight.

If you can find a file (bmp or any other) that crashes MC, please send it to matt @ jriver.com (no spaces)

Thanks!

Well MC wiped out over half my library just now. Trying to reimport and I'm back to crash after crash again.

I don't know what to tell ya. It just isn't working right now and I'm done playing with it for now. Gettting one major headache. That's all I know.

Just want to add: It's not a file crashing MC. MC is crashing from something else. It could crash right at the beggining. It could crash at the 100 mark. It could even crash 10,000 files later. Whatever it is, it's not nice.

ok. I think it may have to do with customized fields.

Remember in the bug thread I said MC wouldn't import the customized fields. Well if the field is there in the options, I think MC might be trying to do something with it but it's not working??

I removed all those fields and tried to import and it seems that's it working but I don't know for sure if that's what it was.

Another thing I noticed is when you do: Update Library from tags (always), MC will reread the files, asks if you want to keep the changes and then it comes up again saying the fields (that MC just imported) have changed  and it would need to update the files.

This is what I don't get...if MC just read the tags to update the library, then the tags and library should be the same and MC shouldn't have to re-update the tags. This is for customized fields.

When I did this, MC corrupted the library and 50,000+ files dissappeared (from the library).

We were asking plugins about calculated fields, which is obviously silly.  It still shouldn't ever crash though.

In any event, this will be changed next build.  You'll have to let us know...

I have delimited fields in some of my images. that's what I meant.

I don't think that it though cause it happened again. I noticed MC will flicker (white) periodically. Then this last time, it stayed and that's when it crashed. Maybe it's the skinning engine now?

I'll wait and see what happens and I'll let you know right away.

Thanks Matt!

I don't have any plugins running at the moment. It seems MC will be going fast then it gets stuck, then crashes. I'm only doing video and images. Maybe it's from switching formats a lot?

What I don't get is that when you do it again, it imports the file it got stuck on.

It could be a buggy DirectShow filter.  Maybe get the latest DivX or whatever.

Well it isn't file related because it just crashed while scanning a directory already imported. Now I'm really stumped on what to do.

You know that import file counter that's on the dialog box? I never had a problem before this change was implemented. Ever since then, I've been experiencing crashes.

Could that possibly be causing problems? Maybe there's something not being calculated right?
