Problem Creating Output Directory
« on: September 10, 2004, 01:23:59 am »

All of a sudden MC tells me it can't create an Output Directory when I try and rip a disc. I checked in Options and the directory is correct. The HD has plenty of space. I used EAC to rip the disc to the same HD and no problems.

This is the first time I have encountered this problem since I started ripping my collection (about 50 discs so far).

I have restarted the computer several times. Has something become corrupted within MC?

Check to see if the directory structure created by MC (C:/path.../Artist/Album/File Name) is not too long. Windows has a limit to how many characters you can use. In this "pre-coffee, early morning mode" I forget how many characyers the limit is...

I have tried changing all the directories, no results.

File/folder naming structure hasn't changed, I ripped about 50 discs prior to this problem

I can access the drive and create folders no problem.

Using EAC to rip to the directory, then importing media/properties from file names as a work around right now, not as convenient for sure.

MC recently crashed (hung the computer, had to do a hard restart) could something have gotten corrupted?

I just had the same problem this morning.
It turned out that MC was creating a subdirectory with the album name and the album in question had "..." (3 dots) in it. That must cause a conflict in windows. I replaced the 3 dots with an underscore (doing a tag edit of the album name) and it worked.

Check for non-alphanumeric characters in artist or album name.

We can't reproduce this.

Could you give the exact artist, album, base path, and output rules.

Also, does it matter what encoder you use?

Thanks.

Try the next build. Directories with three or more dots in the name could not be created by Media Center. Are there other cases that were causing problems?
