I had to rebuild my HTPC to resolve some problems (and it did!!) trouble is my registration key is now more than 2 weeks old.  How many "restores" do I have and how do I get a new registration key.

Thanks
Steve

Hi Steve, here's the thread you can check to find out more about J River's License Restore policy.

http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=10029

I believe it say you get 10 restores per year, after which you would need to buy more restores (not repurchase the entire program).

One thing I still don't know is how much it will cost to buy a new batch of 10 restores...with the issues I'm having when sending MC9 as gifts, I have to use a personal restore each time I do it using the current method available. Hopefully in my case J River would give me a free restore for each gift I purchase...

KingSparta - I got it from the J River FAQ:

Q: I tried to restore several times, and the last time it failed.
A: You have ten free restores per year. After that, you need to purchase another Registration Code.

I see.

I think the un-Offical policy is they will reset it if the users key was not abused due to Pirating.

Yes, I've heard this as well from John Gateley and I do fully understand why the policy is there.

Hopefully John and J River are discussing the possibility of re-vamping their "Give MC9 as a gift" webpage before the holiday season, or some users may have to request such a reset of restores due to the current process requirements.

See my thread: "Is it possible to easily send Media Center as a gift": http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=15962 (unfortunately for me the answer to that question is no at the moment based on my recent experience).

"Purchase another registration code" sounds like buying the product over again. Something tells me it costs the same.

One thing kwake: Why do you keep needing to use restores (with your registration code) when you buy MC as a gift for someone else? I followed your "send MC as a gift" thread and didn't understand that part. If you buy a new copy of MC....why would this affect your current set of restores? Could you clarify please?

Because when you purchase a license for someone else from your own PC, it automatically installs that new license to your personal copy of Media Center. You then have to use one of your 10 restores to put your own license back. :-[

The gift recipient then receives an email with a link to the new license (along with the price you paid for it :-\ ), which they can then apply to their copy of Media Center (if they are able to follow the instructions in the J River FAQ successfully and encounter no error messages).

I've been asking in the other thread that it be easier to send MC as a gift, so as to not have to go through all of that. Hopefully they agree it's not that cool, and will do something about it in future. 8)
