APE files keep dissapearing
« on: October 28, 2003, 07:46:24 am »

The first 4 or 5 songs of an album (ape fiiles) keep turning up missing from the HD. They're still listed in MC library. The mp3 files are still intact, (both types of files stored in separate folders in the album/artist folder).

This seems to be a random event that only happens to ape files on the HD. This has happened to about 30 album out of 1500 ape files (vs 12k mp3vbr files)

Never heard of that before.

In any event, I'd recommend an upgrade to MC 9.1 as the APE support is the latest and greatest then. (APE 3.98 based with APEv2 tagging)

I've had the exact opposite problem where APE files disappear from the library but are still on the hard drive.

I'm not convinced either way that I didn't accidentally delete them from the library, though.

doesn't this happen when you do a "convert format" with "update database" checked?

Can't remember, but I'm sure this happened to me too. The resultant mp3's were imported to the library while the apes were removed.

I don't have "update database" checked. I'm pretty sure I haven't done anything accidently but have ruled that out completely( I am still human!).

At this point, I'm still converting my old analog library and I am used to the way 9.0 works (and I like it).

In the near future I'll be rebuilding my computer and I'll move to 9.1 then. I guess in the meantime I'll just have to put up with this little gremlin and re-rip the CDs as I come across the missing files.

Fortunately, I've been making CDs of the analog stuff that was of high enuff quality, the rest has been converted to vbr-mp3s and are backed up for the moment on data dics. My new system will have 2 large HDs and a removable HD tray.

it may have been the rename fuction it at one time would drop files out of the list.

it has never worked correctly since version 7.

matt has made some fixes in the latest version not sure if this helps yet.

KingSparta, you may have hit on something thre, I do rename  some files from time to time.

Another thought came to mind: I also have WMP 9 installed. Might that have futzed around with some of those files? I never liked WMP because  it's always trying to have its way with DRM and other stuff.

WMP9 doesn't support APE at all, so I doubt it's the culprit.
