OT: Another reason to use MC.
« on: October 30, 2003, 10:47:03 am »

This is an interesting article about an experience with different pressings of commercial CDs having problems.  Worth a read.

http://www.rogernichols.com/EQ/EQ_2000_02.html

Don't know much about the validity, but I assume that it is true, as Roger Nichols has a long resume of CDs that he has been an engineer on.

It makes me glad that I'm using my computer to remove possible jitter from the reading of the CDs.

Also, he makes an interesting comment that some artists are cranking up their music too loud for the CDs and as a result, their music is effectively overflowing the 16 bit sample values.  I would think that most of the albums on which this is happening, probably aren't that good to begin with. ;)

Does anyone have the Garbage albums?

1. Garbage
2. Garbove 2.0
3. Beautifulgarbage

I'm not as familiar with the third album, but certainly the first two sound like this description. Once you crank up their volume, they start to start horribly distorted / poorly mixed or something.

Quite tragic as I quite enjoy the muzak...

I had always assumed that the recording people were having a bad day that day. They could even be self-produced 8-)
