ALL FIXED!!! Read the last post...  

Just upgraded from 8 to 9 to hopefully allow burning with my new burner.

Now I can't even rip.

Rip error:  Cam not read digital data (same with both DVD-ROM and CDRW)
Burn Error:  Error writing pre-gep

Windows 2000
Mitsumi CR-485GTE burner

Reads and writes fine with other programs.  Any help would be apreciated.

How old is the burner? What version of MC9? If you go to 'Help/System Info' and paste the contents (they're automatically placed on the clipboard) here it might be a little easier to find out what the problem may be.

Brand new burner.  Newest update of  MC9.

It will rip in version 8, but not in 9.  In 8 the device screen has more options such as IDE or ASPI.  Version 9 does not seem to have these.  Will play some more, but I see no real option for the device in MC9.

Neither version will burn with this burner.

I can't understand how it can not read from the burner or the regular DVD-rom.  All other programs read fine from both including MJ8.

In the options for MJ8, you can choose Auto, IDE or ASPI.  It will not work in Auto but only IDE.  I can not find this option in MC9.  Does it exist??

Yes, I am the Administrator.  I am quite happy to adjust registry settings directly , if needed.

Could you send me a  log file of a rip attempt (and / or a burn attempt)?

Here are the instructions:


For burning:

Turn on MC's logging for CD burning by changing the value of this registry key from zero (0) to one (1):
 
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JRiver\Media Jukebox\CD Writer\Logger
 
Then just start up Media Center and try to burn a CD (you can leave test mode checked to avoid creating a coaster). Then exit MC and find a file in the MC program directory called "cdwriter.log" and email that to me. Remember that the log file is overwritten each time you start up MC, so you must send the file before restarting MC.
 


For ripping:

Success!!!!  Can now rip and burn...

This is long and complicated, so read on if you has Windows 2000 and the same problem.  Ude at your own risk......

I was reading the "Fix for some bad CD burns" thread and decided to try and re-installed the IDE/ATA controller.  When I started, under "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller in the Device Manager, I had listed:

- Intel(r)  82801BA Bus Master IDE Controller
- Ultra ATA Channel
- Ultral ATA Channel

1)  I uninstalled "Intel(r)  82801BA Bus Master IDE Controller", then rebooted.  After 2 re-boots, I showed:

- Intel(r)  82801BA Bus Master IDE Controller
- Primary IDE Channel
- Secondary IDE Channel
- Ultra ATA Channel
- Ultral ATA Channel

Now the IDE Channels and the Ultra ATA Channel conflict.  In addition, there was no uninstall optin for the ATA channels.

2)  Went into the properties for "Secondary IDE Channel", Advanced tab.  Changed device type to "None".  Reboot.

Now the uninstall option for the (secondary) Ultra ATA Channel appears.

3)  Uninstall (second) "Ultra ATA Channel", reboot.

4)  Go back into the Advanced tab for the Secondary IDE Channel and set device type to Auto and transfer mode to "DMA if available", reboot.

Now the Secondary channel device should work properly.

5)  This is the tricky bit.  If you try the same for the primary channel, Windows won't boot as it loses the hard drive.  Swap cables to put the hard drive to the master of the secondary IDE bus.  Reboot, going to bios to hard set the drive locations.  When you have booted back up, do the same to the primary channel that was done to the secondary (steps 2 through 4).

6)  Shut down again, get the cables all sorted back to where they are suppossed to be, reboot and hopefully you should only have:

- Intel(r)  82801BA Bus Master IDE Controller
- Primary IDE Channel
- Secondary IDE Channel

Under the Advanced tab the option for device type should not be available and it should say "current transfer mode" is "Ultra DMA Mode" for all drive.

This was a very large PITA, but all seems to be working right now.

I had a similar problem where I could not Rip or Burn either.
In my case the fault was similar yet different.

Upon closer scrutiny I noticed that my drives were being reported to be SCSI devices, which in fact thy are NOT!
After much confusion as to how this may have occurred, several unsucessful attempts to change this, deleting the devices and allowing Windows to reinstall them on re-boot, updating drivers, etc I stumbled upon the cure.

In updating the 'VIA 4-in-1 drivers' my devices and IDE channels once again returned to their proper settings allowing my CD drives to one again Rip & Burn properly.
