TV issues
« on: October 03, 2003, 07:20:22 pm »

Hi guys!  Using MC but am having some issues with TV mode.  I use MC to watch TV with my dual 21” monitors, so this is VERY important to me.

1.  When changing from TV Tuner view to "Playing Now", ALL the channels show up in “Playing Now”.  It is my opinion that I won’t be watching TV in “Playing Now”, so can this be changed?  If not, can an option be made to “Clear Playing Now On Exit”?

2.  Whatever I do, I can’t get MC to record reliably or timeshift at all:

 a.  I am using the profile “640 x 240 JRiver Codec Timeshift, WMV Recording, 29.97”.  If I'm timeshifting by hitting pause while in "TV Tuner" mode, MC will either show the last image in a type of "frame-by-frame" blur until Stop is hit OR (the other 90% of the time) MC will just freeze up.  Sometimes it will freeze and have to be Ctrl-Alt-Del'd to be killed OR will just show a blank screen until the stop button is pressed.  Once it is pressed it reverts to the TV view and says "Time-shifting cancelled.  Viewing in regular mode.".  Recording works but only without being able to see what's being recorded.  After recording is stopped and played back, the resulting video is choppy and slightly blurred, like there's 2 overlapping images.  So recording in this mode does not work for me.

 b.  When using "320x240 JRiver Codec" I get the same results when attempting to timeshift.  However, recording works without any issues.

3.  When I look at the dropdown box at the codecs installed, I have four choices:
2 640x240 (One timeshift and one not)
     1 640x480
     1 320x240

4.  When watching TV and holding down FF, an error pops up saying "Position must not be negative"

5.  When in Options->TV Tuner->Advanced->Advanced Properties->D-Clicking on any of the choices->Canceling\Closing that window->Once back to the Advanced Properties screen the Cancel burron is greyed out.  In my opinion it shouldn't be.

FYI:  I'm using the Haupauge WintV card with the latest WDM drivers with an ATI Radeon 9800 with the latest Catalyst drivers.

I have the same problem whith timeshifting. MC freezes or crashes when starting it.

Though it only happens when I start timeshifting when my screen is displayed as fullscreen on my secondary monitor (in my case my TV).

If showing on the primary monitor, all works fine.

I have a hauppage card too and a Radeon 9700 and build 267

Bumping this so JRiver can have a chance to look at it.

The default Recording Profiles use JRiver Video Codec at highest quality setting (10). Maybe you can try creating a custom profile and set quality to lower value, such as 6 or 7.

Brooktree/Conexant based cards have a limitation on the video resolution when trying to record and view at the same time. That may be why you can only record at 320 x 240.

Please read "TV FAQ" in MC Help. Also read this: http://www.musicex.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=MediaCenter;action=display;num=1036784704

2 640x240 (One timeshift and one not)
     1 640x480
     1 320x240

These are Preset Recording Profiles. Each profile would include settings such as video and audio codec, and others. JRiver Video Codec and Windows Media Video codec are the only ones used in the preset profiles.

To use other video codec, such as DivX, PicVideo MJPEG, MPEG4, etc., whichever is installed on your computer, you need to create a custom profile. Click Add button to do it.

4.  When watching TV and holding down FF, an error pops up saying "Position must not be negative"

This happens when you try FF in normal view mode. I will need to look into making the message clearer. Use FF or Rew only in time-shifting mode.

Whatever option or quality I choose:

JRiver Codec, DivX, Xvid, whatever !!!

MC crashes or freezes when starting timeshifting when my screen is displayed on my second monitor (TV).

I'm always recording on 320x240 because my card doesn't support more. (Hauppage card with wdm drivers)

If starting timeshifting when the screen is in Mega-Me, all works fine, but then doubleclicking so it switches to my TV, timeshifting stops and MC freezes.

I really honestly tried all settings (spend 5 hours to switch to ALL settings) and nothing changes.

When still working with MC9 some time ago, I managed to get it to work. It looks like it has stopped working since we can choose the audio stream, don't know, just guessing.

Please help !!

What resolution do you use for fullscreen mode? There used to be a problem with using fullscreen unless you use "Desktop resolution". It may still be the case. When going from Mega-Me to fullscreen, choose "Desktop resolution" if possible (you only need to do it once, subsequently double-clicking will use that resolution).

it is on "Desktop Resolution".

I tried also every other resolution available in that list.

Well, I did some checking and found that if I'm running MC on my primary monitor and hit pause timeshifting works fine.  If I move it to my secondary monitor then the problems start.  Video card limitation?  TV card limitation?

Radeon 9800 Pro 128 with latest Catalyst drivers.

Hauppauge WintV PCI card with latest WDM drivers.

It looks like video card limitation to me (Catalyst ?). I will however look in my code to see if anything needs fixing. We have seen quite a few reported problems with Catalyst in the past.

How is your secondary display setup (clone, desktop extension etc.)?

My primary is set as 1280x1024 16bits
and the secondary is set as 1024x768 16bit

Same as bennyd.  Desktop extension, 1280x1024 32bit.  One thing I do notice is that when playing 3d vis', when the vis is on the secondary monitor they are slow and choppy, but on the primary it's fine.

Catalyst is the driver family for the Radeon line of cards.

ATI just released a new driver, so I'm going to try it out and report back.

Sorry, still no clue. And I have to say that I have not been able to devote any time on this issue lately. Debugging this will take a major effort ( ;D) since I do not have a TV set near my computer, but I will do it as soon as I can.

This may well be a driver issue. Have you tried rolling back Catalyst versions?

I have the latest drivers and tried with a few previous onces as well.

I'll keep on waiting until you find the time to check it out.
