CDDB: malformed command sent from server to client
« on: December 14, 2002, 05:18:46 am »

Almost always when trying to get tag info from CDDB I get the message "malformed command sent from server to client "  Even when the File has been found on the CDDB.  I try the same with other jukeboxes such as Music Match and alway the tag info and picture appears correctly.

Can anyone suggest a solution?  Is this a bug?

Thanks,

Robert

Media JukeBox Does Not Use CDDB anylonger, Upgrade To The Latest Version And Use YADB database.

I downloaded MJ 3 days ago (version 8.0.393).

When I choose properties for a file to see the tag  the only option in thee pull down menus to get information is "Get info from CDDB".  There is nothing about YADB.

Unless you've had MJ for roughly six months or more, CDDB will not work. It was dropped because of a major price increase for licensing.

To add to KingSpartas comment:

From the toolbar click > Settings > Options > Device Settings > Audio CD Options > CD Information Database. This is where you can find the option of which database to use.

Yeah, it's a great new system YADB. Basically, you insert your CD, then you type in the entire track listing because it's not on the database and submit it.

It's also a work in progress. Rome wasn't built in a day either. When they get this hammered out it should work just fine. Taking a poke at the guys for trying to save a small fortune in licensing fees doesn't seem like a fair assessment of what is to come from this.

Like I said in another post on the subject, I'd pay the extra license fee not to have to do all the extra typing, give me the functionality anyday.

You're one of many who use MJ-MC. Not all are as willing to pay extra for access to CDDB. Hit the lottery recently? Maybe you could front J River the cash for CDDB licensing. Do a search and you might get lucky as to how much they are charging for the use of its database.

It would take more then a couple of users paying fifteen bucks extra to cover the cost of this.

Skeet you can have CDDB back, it is only $60,000 for it's use

If you wish to pay that send it to me.

why do you think no one is using it any longer?

Thanks for the information, but I have a question:

How can I apply YADB information to an MP3 files I already have stored on my PC?

Like I said in the properties for a file there is only "lookup information on the CDDB".

By the way I am a newbie with MJ have used it just for a week.

It doesn't seem like this feature works with YADB in version 8 at the moment.  I tried setting Tools/Options/Device Settings/Audio CD Settings to YADB, but MJ8 still uses CDDB when I  select a track and go to Properties/Tools/Get Information From CDDB.

After you change it, you should go to the CD (left tree) right click, get info from YADB.

This is hardcoded, and so is CD Disk info to use CDDB. The only "lookup" that adheres to the setting chosen in "Tools/Options/Device Settings/Audio CD Settings" is Update from CD Database.

That's what I would do if I was trying to look up info for a cd that I want to rip.  Roberto_torres' question was about looking up info for tracks that have already been ripped to mp3 and are on his hard drive.  So, I guess the option to look up info for already ripped tracks works (in MJ8) only if you happen to be one the users who is still able to use CDDB.
