How fast shoud I be synching?
« on: December 09, 2002, 07:01:10 pm »

Ive just downloaded V9 and started to synch the whole library.

It shows 1433 files as tkaing 2:58:15.

This seems rather slow.

I'm running XP to a 20G iPOD.

Thanks for any help.

Your synch time does seem slow. I synched just over 9Gb of songs last night in 35 minutes using the latest builds of MC9 and the iPod plugin.

I'm no expert but from what I've read on the Apple forum slow synching is normally down to the type of firewire card you have. Some work much better than others. I have an Adaptec DuoConnect firewire/USB2 card and have had no performance problems.

What type of firewire card do you have? Also have you tried synching with Ephpod at all? If you have, did that have a similar performance? On my system, MC9 synch faster than Ephpod did so that is a useful check to run.

You might take a look at your networking configuration.  XP turns on networking for firewire/1394, and a couple of people on the Apple forum reported that turning it off fixed problems.

I am using a Dell Lattitude X200 notebook with on board firewire. I posted the topic while waiting for it to synch and then went to bed. In the morning it reported a "out of space" failure. I was synching 5Gb onto an empty 20Gb iPOD. In explorer I can see a bunch of tracks on the iPOD but only a couple are available to play on the iPOD menu!

And I can't eject it!

This whole iPOD thing is proving to be a nightmare.

I have had the iPOD replaced by Apple and the result is the same, so it may well be the firewire.

My last resort is to try a PCMCIA card.

I would really appreciate a recommendation of one that is known to work with the iPOD.

Thanks for replying.

Did you try turning off 1394 networking?

Yes, I turned off the networking (it already was off).

I can transfer 1 track at a time but if I do a bunch the hour glass comes up and I end up with "Media Core" not responding, whatever that is.

I have reformatted the iPOD before trying with each change so I know that the iPOD is clean.

Make sure you have the latest version of both MC9 and the plugin.  MC9.0.88 is in the first thread on the beta 9 board (see "Boards" above).
