Storing Cover Art as folder.jpg
« on: February 10, 2004, 04:50:30 am »

Currently all of my cover art is stored inside the MP3 tags but I would like to change this so the cover art is stored on the hard drive, preferably so it is stored in the album folder as folder.jpg.

I'm not too keen on the idea of storing all the images in the cover art folder in MC for 2 reasons:

1.  If the links get broken in some way I end up with a folder full of thousands of images and I have thousands of files without cover art.
2.  This solution does not look like it could be easily ported to another player.  I need a degree of future-proofing.

If my concerns are misplaced then please let me know.  Otherwise does anyone know how I can get the cover art out of my MP3's and into a folder.jpg in the album folder, either with MC, an MC Plug In or even another tagging program.

Does King Sparta allow the reverse?  I have tons of album covers in my album folders.  Can I use the King Sparta pluggin to integrate the album covers into the mp3 tags so I can delete the jpg from each folder?

It does.
Is that right King?  I thought your plug in found new cover art on the internet and saved it as folder.jpg rather than saving the existing embedded covert art as folder.jpg ?

Just want to be sure before I start.

estwdd & JLee

If it finds it, it depends on how you have Media Center Setup.

If you have media center setup to save inside file it will do it, if you have it setup not to it will save a path to the file.

don't take my word on it, it may not work exactly how you want it to work, I don't know.

take a few test files and test it on them if it works the way you want good, if not then explain to me in a detailed step by step manner on how it should work acording to you.

I plan to go back into this plug-in next, and fix some things to make them work how I want them to work. this includes sending my FTP server any found cover art so i can start collecting art.

we will see what happens

It doesn't do what I need King but that's understandable as it's called cover art finder.  I don't need to find cover art - I already have it.  I just need to extract it from the MP3 and make a file called folder.jpg out of it.

Someone suggested I check out the Album View Plug In which I'm doing right now but I can't see a way to get it to do what I want.

Why don't you want it in the file?

Does it slow things down? I'm just curious as mine are all in the file...

3 Reasons:

1.  I was reading up on Music Lobby and it doesn't show cover art if it's embedded in the file

2.  I can save a lot of hard disk space if I hold jpg once instead of 20 times.

3.  You get pretty pictures in windows explorer.

Dude, if you already have it in the file, just unmark in MC in file, then use update tags, MC will put it back in a file for you, and it will not be in the mp3.

Wasn't there a setting in mc to store it as folder.jpg?

No, but once they are in file form

then if you run my plug-in and you turn on folder.jpg option (you must have the files in album folders) then my plug-in will move the art in the coverart folder to the album folder as folder.jpg

Someone suggested I check out the Album View Plug In which I'm doing right now but I can't see a way to get it to do what I want.

In AlbumView:

1)  Select your albums
2)  Right click on an album to bring up the context menu.
3)  Choose Tools then Extract/Copy artwork.

Thanks Rhino.

It comes up 'No album artwork' but I can see the art work.

I haven't registered the plug in yet could that be why?

I'm not at my PC now Rhino but it's in the panel where you hit the start button to go extract the artwork.  It's to the left of the album details.  There's a red cross next to the text 'no artwork'.  I can give a more accurate description later.

It actually doesn't waste as much as you'd think as long as you use the typical size of around 30K for each picture.  Assuming an average file size of 5 megs and an average of 12 songs per album, this means that after 500 albums you'd only waste 3 albums worth of space by including cover art.  This is only about 185 megs of space per 30 gigs of mp3s.

If that works King it sounds ideal.  I didn't realise that MC would extract the art from the file and put it in the cover art folder if I changed the option.  I'll try it tonight.
