Any use to keep ID3V1 tags?

I was reading - a lot- about tags today.

And i have the feeling that ,except for mp3 players, there is no need to keep ID3V1 tags.

I remember KingSparta allways saying that ID??? tags make a lot of problems.
It was about ID3V1 ?

Would like to get some light from the  SUPRA_MEGA competent Interact Heads

I can provide an empty head available, if you need some additional storage space   ;D

Since I recently went on a mission of surgically trimming my MC database filesize by eliminating all unnecessary data in my tags to increase MC's speed.
I would be interested in some additional information on this subject as well, I may be able to trim some more.

Nope...v2 tags cause alot of problems & most devices don't support them.  v2 tags are pigs and cause a lot of overhead, but they can hold an unlimited amount of information.  v1 tags are efficient, fixed length (128 bytes) and supported by every device that supports tags.

If i understood that i read--YES ,it happens from time to time !- ID3V1 tags are quite small.
And you would not get that much  room back.
They said a small bedroom for any 1234567890 ID3V1 tags removed.

Look like you may need to sleep in the salon for some time ....

Zrocker - but isn't it true that in the genre field you're limited to pre-defined genres (or is that an artifact of the tagger I've been using)?

Yes, they are predefined in ID3v1(.1) by an 8 bit value (2^8-1 or 255 possible choices). I strip them out personally. My SlimX reads v2's just fine...and so does every software player I've tried. Tag saves are very fast (I specify v2 only and tag padding via LAME's --id3v2-only --pad-id3v2 switches when encoding).

One cure that could be implemented is apev2 tags in mp3's. Most players (hardware) that key on ID3v1 tags would ignore these anyway. Software players could use them more efficiently then the current mess with ID3V2.x tags.

But , no ID3V2 tags == no art sleeve ,bio , no Replay gain ect ect ?
