Ipaq MP3 Player - Crashes MJ8
« on: November 21, 2002, 03:57:20 am »

I recently downloaded the Ipaq 3.0.14 MJ8 driver for the PA Series MP3 player (directly from the MJ site).

Now, when  I go in to "CD/DVD/Handhelds" the device label shows up in the tree, but the program crashes when I actually select the device to view its contents.

Upon crashing, I get the "Media Jukebox has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience." message.  This happens every time I try to view the device.

I've tried uninstalling the device, rebooting, rebooting with the device still on (read that might fix it somewhere), but still no go.

My system:
Windows XP Pro w/ MJ8
Compaq PA-2 MP3 Player
Toshiba Portege 4000 (P3 733/768MB RAM/20gig)

If anyone can offer up a potential solution, it would be greatly appreciated.  MJ8 rocks otherwise, I use it for everything. Using it for device management would allow me to finally wipe my 'puter clean of all the other  crap audio apps.

Thanks,
Chris

cscordo,

I do not think the Plug-in will work with the PA-2. We have tested it successfully with the PA-1, but not all Compaq players are based on the code that is supported by the PA-1.

Sorry.

I was under the impression it does.  Here's why:

When the device is initially plugged in, XP pops up a message indicating detection of "Compaq PA-2 Audio Device".  But when browsing the device manager, as well as Windows Media Player, the device is seen as a PA-1 audio device.   Additionally,  Compaq points users to PA-1 device updates for this device (for the few updates that exist).

This leads me to believe that the same codebase is usable for this device as well.  But obviously, it doesn't function correctly, so all points aside:

Does MJ plan on supporting this device? (I'm not sure what the level of effort would be since the previous model is already supported)

Are there any supported/unsupported workarounds I can try?

Thanks for your time,
Chris

cscordo,

We don't have this player to test so it is hard to come up with a workaround. If you want to pursue this further, email me at steve @ jriver.com and I will create a Plug-in that you can use to help debug this to see if it might work.

Steve, I actually use the plug-in for my PA-2 and for the most part it works fine.  There are some issues that keep me running to MusicMatch (ugh!) to transfer my music that perhaps you could take a look at.  If not, it's not a big deal, I plan on getting an iPod for Christmas anyway, I just would really like to uninstall MusicMatch if at all possible. ;)

The issue I'm having (or should I say, was having, I just realized the plug-in doesn't work with v9) is that it would seem I can't change which card I want to upload to.  For instance, if I place a song in queue that's bigger than the amount of space available in card one, and then try to upload it to card two, Media Jukebox says there's not enough space and then the tree view goes to the Media Library.

By the way cscordo, where can I find updates for the Compaq MP3 player?  Also, I too am running Windows XP so I'm not sure what problem you're encountering with the IPaq plug-in.

Nekura,

I found a couple of references to updates (presumably) over at the Compaq community forum.  One example is at the bottom, and is pretty old.

As for just being able to use the PA-2 with XP, I am having some issues (worked fine with Win2k).  It seems that XP sees the device, but won't allow me to do anything with it other than format the media (via Win Media Player).   I have yet to install the MusicMatch crapplication that came on the CD.  From what I understand, it isn't needed for the device to function (besides, XP detected it already).

Does XP show your device as PA-1 or PA-2 in your Device Manager?

What, if anything, did you install as supporting software for your device? (ie. did you install everything from the included CD, nothing at all, just MM, etc.)

Do you have issues with XP detecting your device correctly?

I appreciate everyone's time-
-Chris

Nope, XP has been detecting it fine ever since I started using it.  Under the device manager, it shows up as a PA-1, though the location says Compaq PA-2 Personal Audio Player.  I did install MusicMatch as well as whatever else was on the CD, assuming there actually was something.

Nekura,

I want to try to understand the problem you mention. If you try to transfer a file that is too big and the Plug-in tells you it will not work, at that point do you try to drag and drop the file to the other memory location that does have enough space? If you do this, I think the transfer should go through. Are you requesting that this happen automatically?

Thanks,
Steve

The problem for me is that MJ8 crashes whenever I click on the device to view its contents or try to move a file on to it.

I haven't been able to successfully move a file on or off the device yet using MJ8, nor have I been able to view any files on the device.  As soon as I select the device in the left-hand nav, the application displays an error and shuts down.

I've tried the MMC card from both slots on the device but it doesn't make a difference.

Nekura,

Could you share with cscordo whatever magical combination of drivers you have installed to get this to work. If you know the relevant file names, can you check the dates and locations of those files and post them.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve, I'd love to, but silly me took a trip down memory lane and realized that if I did install any drivers, it was back when I was using Windows 2000.  After a fresh install of XP, my Compaq IPad was working fine with MusicMatch without the use of additional drivers.

Nekura,

Thanks anyway.

cscordo,

Ugh. Not sure where to go now. You may need to install another app to verify that the problem is consistent between multiple apps which would imply a hardware / driver issue. The fact that this works for Nekura tells me that it is not us, but who knows.

I agree-

As much as I hate to do it- I might have to install MusicMatch to see if it functions properly. I'll post back with any updates.

Thanks for everyone's input on this, its much appreciated.

Re: Ipaq MP3 Player - Crashes MJ8: Now Working
« Reply #13 on: December 06, 2002, 04:28:40 am »

After a lot of trial and error, and a couple of calls to Compaq, I've got the PA-2 working with Windows XP and Media Jukebox.

As it turns out, an updated Windows XP driver supporting both the PA-1 and PA-2 devices is available at www.rioport.com (link at bottom).  After telling customer support numerous times that I would not install MusicMatch (their recommendation at a resolution), they basically 'fessed up' and told me where to get the driver (weird, eh?).

After downloading the driver (and before installing it), I went to the device manager and uninstalled the "USB Devices/Compaq PA-1 Device" item.  Then installed the new driver and restarted the machine.  XP recognized the device, then I was able to open Media Jukebox and format the card.

As a quick recap, if you have a Compaq Ipaq PA-1 or PA-2 device that does not work with XP, do the following:
1. Download the updated XP driver from Rioport (link below)
2. Uninstall the device in the Device Manager.
3. Install the Rioport driver and the MediaJukebox PA-1 driver.
4. Restart your machine.

I've been impressed with Media Jukebox since v7 and I appreciate the all input I received from this forum- Thanks!
