ID3 tagging and Windows XP
« on: December 29, 2003, 04:42:37 pm »

I just installed Win XP on my box and added my hard drive containing all of my mp3 files. With XP, Windows Explorer has a feature that can read the ID3 tags and display them in the file details. The tags on my files do NOT show up unless I disable ID3v2 tags in MJ (latest 8.x version as of 12/29/03) and update the tags. Also, I just got an iRiver ihp-120 portable mp3 player and it too fails to read the tags unless I retag with ID3v2 disabled. This is a much bigger problem than the XP Explorer issue, because the player can't build a proper file database without the tags. All of my files were originally tagged by MJ, so there is no other program causing a problem.

Any ideas? I really don't want to give up v2 tagging...

this is a very old problem and has been talked about in 2001-2002 in this forum.

This is not going to change in MJ8

MC9 and MC10 does not have this problem.

if i remember correctly it really is a Windows XP problem it seems some valid Id3v2 tags will not allow windows XP to show you the tags once they are in the media file. the tags were used in MJ8 to hold replay gain, rating and other data.
