Brand spankin' new install on Media Center 9.1 on a new computer (previous owner of Media Jukebox 8.X). a relatively fast PC with gobs of memory & disk space running WinXP Home.

First thing after install is to set my options. When I try to choose MP3Pro as my ripping option I get the message "Cannot create plug-in MPEGplus Encoder" in a message box with the title "Information."T The MPEGplus Encoder option is selected, though, in the Encoding section of the Options dialog box. But the Quality field is blank and the Advanced button is disabled.

I clicked the link to go to the Encoder Plug-in Page, but found no sections that identified encoder plug ins.

there is not mp3pro encoder/decoder in MC.
You have to use an external encoder

Just FYI, MP3Pro (.mp3) and MPEGplus (.mpc, more commonly known now as Musepack) are not the same format. Media Center does not support the MP3Pro format.

If you go here:

then click on Featured Skins/Plug-ins, the MPEGplus Encoder should be the first one in the list.

Oops, brain fart I guess. I didn't even think MP3plus vs. MP3Pro. Oy.

Just wondering then: will MP3pro be an option in a future version? (Background: Like many, i got MusicMatch preinstalled. It has MP3Pro as an option. did some testing. Equivalent bitrate and "equivalent" quality (128) result in file sizes with MP3Pro half of MP3. MP3Pro encoded files work with my MP3 player and MP3CD player. Musicmatch rips files in a flash, but has two huge flaws:
- Can't edit song info before ripping (if song info in DB is wrong or formatted incinsistently)
- Album Artist in library shows song artist of first song, pretty useless for compilations)
I've liked the UI of Media Jukebox the best of all jukebox applications i've seen (especially how I can customize how i want my song files to be stored), but MP3 ripping has always been slooooow.....

Why not use WMA? I believe the equivelent in 128 mp3 is about 60 something wma...

wma is more compatible with different things then mp3pro....

WMA can't be read by CD/MP3 players, such as the one in my car.

MP3 is also a commonly accepted cross platform standard, while WMA isn't.

MP3Pro files are similar in size to WMA, but more universally playable.

Probably not, as it is not a very widely supported format.

Sorry, it sounds like there may be a little confusion about the differences between MP3pro and MP3. Please, correct me if I'm mistaken.

Any MP3 player will playback an MP3pro file. However, unless the player is specifically designed to play MP3pro you won't receive any of it's sound quality/smaller filesize benefits and you should just be using a "normal" MP3s.

Yes, MP3 is a commonly accepted standard. MP3pro is not. They should kind of be thought of as two separate formats.
