I've burned many a CD with DSP enabled (for audio gain) ... but now, out of the blue, I get fatal MC errors.  If I disable DSP options, it will work ... however, if I enable DSP options (even if I disable all DSP checkboxs), I will get the fatal error (which implies a log is being written, and MC will have to be restarted).

I have a feeling something has been corrupted... but  trying to re-install MC does not work.  Any advice would be much appreciated!

Today ... having yesterday burned a CD of a variety of tracks for a friend (... DSP options disabled ...), I get the error message ... cannot start the write.  I've tried several blank CDs, the brand of which has been ok in the past, and shouldn't be the problem.

Again, let me emphasize ... this just began out of the blue, having previously burned many CDs just as it should work (... even with DSP options enabled).  Believing I have a corrupted file, I'd like to re-install MC, but I also believe I shoud remove all possible files first.  How can I un-install MC, and re-install without using up another reg code??

Couldy you send me a log file of the burn process? Here are the instructions:

Turn on MC's logging for CD burning by changing the value of this registry key from zero (0) to one (1):
 
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JRiver\Media Jukebox\CD Writer\Logger
 
Then just start up Media Center and try to burn a CD (you can leave test mode checked to avoid creating a coaster). Then exit MC and find a file in the MC program directory called "cdwriter.log" and email that to me. Remember that the log file is overwritten each time you start up MC, so you must send the file before restarting MC.

However, I may have got past the can't start the CD write problem, by realizing some of the tracks were Oggs ... so I rip'd them again to MP3s.  The CD write worked ... but I am still getting the fatal ... MC will have to be restarted error message if I try to enable DSP effects.

I bump this thread in hopes of more help, even while I seem to have found a work-around while writing this (see NOTE below).  I'm sorry if this asks for further work with what is implied to be a finished version of MC9.1, but it has been an exasperating holiday, especially when I wanted to create some gifts for friends.

(1) Ogg problem

I selected an existing album of Ogg tracks, all of which play normally and are audio gain analyzed.  I then converted them all to MP3 and kept the intermediate WAV files.  I then imported all files, and analyzed the audio gain for the WAVs.

  [... It's curious to note ... if I analyze the WAVs, the gain properties are the same, EXCEPT the 'BPM' for the WAVs is different than for the original Oggs and subsequent MP3s, and is much as 2x ... e.g., 146 for the WAV and 74 for the MP3/Oggs ...]

My first test is to burn the Oggs, and the parameters are ... "audio CD", speed=4x, "test the write", "decode direct to CD", and disable "apply cross-fade and DSP effects".  The result is "cannot start the write".

Next ... do the same for the MP3s ... and the result is "Test mode recording completed OK".

(2) Problem with enabling "apply cross-fade and DSP effects"

All parameters for again burning the MP3s are the same as above, except for enabling the "... DSP effects" option.  Also note ... for this test I have enabled "... DSP effects", BUT I have disabled all plugins in the "DSP studio" ... cross-fade is smooth and set to 1 second ... "decode files direct to CD" is enabled, ... and "omit silent selections" is disabled.  The result is an immediate fatal error message "Media Jukebox.e.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows.  You will need to restart the program". (Note ... the reference to the executable is not a typo.)

I get the same error for any cross-fade option (e.g., standard, gapless).

I get the same error if I try to burn the WAVs.

Finally ... as I implied before, these problems seem to have simply appeared.  I successfully burned one CD for a friend, with "DSP effects" enabled, and then the very next day wanted to burn an identical CD ... and the fatal error (2) was the result.  I noticed the problem with Ogg tracks while trying to troubleshoot the fatal error ... and I have no idea if the 2 problems are related.

The problem does however seem to be with MC9.1.316 because I can burn a CD if I simplify the parameters.  The failure to burn the Oggs is a mystery because they play properly, and because MC is able to properly convert them to WAVs.  Both problems may still be my installation because I haven't yet tried another earlier version (e.g., how far back would I need to investigate?), and I haven't yet fully un-installed 9.1.316 before re-installing (e.g., how do I do this without violating my registration?).  However, I have tried simply re-installing MC9.1.316.

NOTE: If I disable "decode direct to CD", the all writes (enabling DSP effects, Oggs) will be successful, but it's curious I hadn't disabled this before(?)  It doesn't explain how these two apparently independent problems are somehow connected, and it doesn't explain why one error message or why the other.  If I claim that this is no remedy, and JRiver figures it out, then I hope the effort will go towards understanding many of the CD burning problems I see on the forum.

JRiver ... please (1) fix this, ... or (2) let me know what additional info you need, ... or (3) let me know how to re-install MC9.1, or with which build.
