...even in the US with its draconian laws on copyright (which are soooo hard to understand)

I look at it like this.

Is it legal to record A TV Show from TV (in The US)?

The Answer Is Yes As long as it is for your own use.

Is that the same for ripcast i would think yes.

Not just a tv show, but an over-the-air radio broadcast as well.  Same thing as far as I'm concerned.

i did some searching on this topic. As far as i could understand web radio is not the same as a TV broadcast. Web radio is officially considered as publishing. Which has different copyright laws associated with it.

However, because we do not have advance warning of what track is coming, recording the stream (and having a program that categorises it) is legal (if for personal use etc.)

justin - ive been playing round with encspot and mc smartlists for ripcast files and i havent really improved on your original suggestions. it all works fine but id rather have an automatic solution...
