Low Bitrate/Long Duration???
« on: January 19, 2004, 08:35:59 pm »

I have a few files that were ripped and for some reason the bitrates and durations are messed up. One particular file shows a bitrate of 32, while the duration shows 38:39 (m:s). I play the song and it shows an average bitrate of 192 (VBR) and a duration of 6:35 (m:s).

The track seems to play fine and sounds like a 192 bitrate file.

Is anyone else having this problem?

In my car a 24 kbps file that plays for about 24 mins only has about 5 mins on the mp3 player when it is done.

an hour show (like 45mins+) is like 12 mins

In VBR files the song informations like the duration, the average bit rate and other things are stored in a file header. Theese datas can be wrong. Reasons for that could be the ripping apps., a converting or something else.  When a player reads theese datas, it shows -of course- theese wrong datas but plays the file correctly.
Some players refer the datas only to a bitrate of 128 kB. When the bitrate is different, the song lenght is calculated and shown wrong.
There are some little applications which can correct the VBR Header. Rocket gave you a link to such an application(Thanks Rocket). MC does not have this feature (as i know). I think this would be a nice completion for MC, maybe in the Analyse Modul, but i do not dare to ask for a feature request... ;)

Theese are just my experiences and my 2 cents, i am no mp3-Programmer...

Thanks for the help, everyone. I downloaded the file suggested by Rocketsauce and I'll give it a try.
