So after a quick serch I can't find the answer

What size should cover art be.  I have some covers that go way off the screen and others that size properly.  Is there any hard and fast size that should be used

normaly i have seen from size 150 - 500 aval on the internet

As KingSparta said, it's really just personal preference.

As for going off the screen, mine do that with the normal trackinfo's (see below for sizes)... so I just editted the html page (that's what the trackinfo pages are, just html) to restrict the image to 250x250 so it looks nice on the page (lines up with the top :))... if you need more help doing this or just want my trackinfo, let me know (I also added lyrics to the first page so I don't need to keep changing pages to view the lyrics for each song, and made the artist/song name big so I can read them from my couch... modified from the DJ trackinfo).

I scan mine in myself at around 944x944 :) (varies a little per cover, I haven't equalised them all yet)... I've got a couple at around 1400x1400, but since that's bigger than my full screen res (at least vertically) it has to be shrunk down when viewing the image full screen (and I don't -really- need them that big :)  (though I scan my DVD covers at 3200x2100 so I can zoom in and read that really tiny text :)).

I assume the track info page (HTML page) is in the default location with in media center.  not sure of its exact location but i know they are there.

I will have a look tonight and restrct the image size

I've found that the average size and resolution of most of the cover art that was automatically downloaded was 300 x 300 pixels, and between about 25 and 30KB, so I just continued to use these parameters when I scan one myself.

Just to add some information to this, this means that if you figure an average song to be about 5MB, and an album to average 12 songs, including the cover art "inside the file" will use up only about 3 albums worth of space on a 40GB iPod (a 27KB cover art picture only uses about 1/2 of 1 percent of the space of an average song.)

I've seen a lot of people complain about cover art "wasting space" on their iPods, but giving up only 3 albums out of over 650 seems like a pretty small price to pay to keep the cover art "inside" the mp3.

Walmart.com cover art is 500x500, I use 'irfanview' to resize to 600x600 which will fill the screen on 800x600 monitor.
The  Amazon (.com, .co.uk & .de) sites have 300x300 cover art which I resize to 600 and is still acceptable.
zevelle posted a whole bunch of sites/links with cover art back in november or october I think.
irfanview is also excellent for doing some basic photo editing and it's free.
