Media Server as a Service?
« on: January 28, 2004, 05:19:48 pm »

Is there any way to run the Media Server as a service on Windows 2k?  Currently I have to login in before it will run.

As DeleteMe points out, running it as a service means it runs regardless of who/whether someone is logged in.

There are apps out there (do a google search) that can run executables as services.  Perhaps one of them would work with media server.

I've successfully run it as a service using the srvany.exe tool provided in the W2K Resource Kit and with FireDaemon.

I wrote a how-to for this last year (or the year before maybe) but it's not showing up in a forum search.  I'll see if I can find the original.

Basically you have to run it once with the "Allow Desktop Interaction" flag set so you can set the correct options. After that, it can/will run fine without anyone logged on.

Thanks for the info.  I'll give srvany.exe a try . . . if that doesn't work, I'll be back!   :)
