MC and removable HDs
« on: February 06, 2004, 09:00:35 pm »

I have 2 firewire drives and they some times come up as different drive letters.  Is there any way to lock their drive letters?  MC of course can't see the files if they change locations?  Quite a pain.

In Windows XP and 2000, you can assign drive letters to drives via "Disk management" (right click on "My Computer" and select "Manage," then select "Disk Management.")  Note that if something else is allowed to take a drive letter that you used on another removeable drive (I'm not sure if this can happen automatically or not), the first removeable drive could come up with a different letter.  As long as you don't repeat any letters, Windows should remember the letters for removeable drives.

I don't think there is any way to do this with Win98.

I'm running XP.  I'll give that a try.  I guess that I can put it fairly far along ... i.e. drive T or something like that.

I have the same (non-MC) annoyance, my removable drives are not always the same drive letter, and I have to go to ComputerManagement to reset the drive letter.  This is a windows issues, Windows is trying to "help" us when we don't want the help.

Yeah... automagically is definitely not the way things should go.

Do you have that problem if you mount the drives at much higher letters?

Additionally, I wonder whether mounting the drives in a directory in the filestructure would improve things.

I have my usb drive as M:, and sometimes, I plug it in and it wants to be I: and i have to change it.

But I like the idea of mounting in a directory, I'll bet that makes it stable ?
