Accidentally deleted all files!
« on: January 31, 2004, 01:09:01 pm »

So I was keying ahead whilst deleting old WMA files (have replaced with VBR mp3 files so didn't need them) and I'm not sure how (keying ahead is a good bet!), but ended up deleting ALL files from media centre AND hard disk!

Now I have run Recovermyfiles software to find what it can that has not been overwritten on the hard disk and have recovered some of what I lost, my question is, I still have my ipod full (approx 28Gb) of tunes and playlists.
Is there a way I can pull my data back to my PC?
(I did backup my Library before all of this, but I'm not sure what good that will be to me...?)

Any help will be appreciated.

Got To Love That Delete Key

On Some MP3 Players That You Can See As A Drive You Can Just use Windows Explorer, To Move The Files Back To The Computer.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure there is a way to get them from the iPod. Check the iPod thread, I think it's been asked and answered there before.

The safest way would be to do a copy and then an import into a new library...

The music tracks are stored on the iPod in directory \iPod_Control\Music\.  I'm not sure where the playlists are but you might be able to recover them from the library backup you made.

iPod_Control itself is hidden but you can either CD to it from the command line or set your folder options to show hidden files in Windows Explorer.  I wouldn't try to reset the attribite to make it visible.

Once you're there, you can copy all of the tracks back to your hard drive.  The files are in subdirectories named Fnn and the file names themselves are just made up of numbers but the tags are still in the files so you should be able to do an import and get everything back.  You can then rename the files to whatever scheme you prefer.  As I said, I'd do the import into a new library just to keep everything clean.

I might be wrong (I've never tried it), but I think I remember reading somewhere that there is a way to do it from within MC, by right-clicking the drive letter of the iPod in the tree.  Might be worth a look. read below!!

**EDIT:  If you plug in the iPod, then open MC, then click the iPod in the tree, you will see all the songs on the iPod in the main window. Select all of the songs, then right click and there is an option "Download to PC."  But you have to right click the selected list of files, not the iPod in the tree as I stated above. You probably still have to do a Rename from Properties after you get them on your PC.

Yeah, but the iPod plug-in is in so much flux right now I'm not sure I'd trust it.

touchee....if the OP has a stable version, I'd go with the MC method, otherwise, I would use RemyJ's solution

You may want to invest in a program like Ghost... That would have helped you here...

Nor me, you could always just use Windows backup to back up to a file on a different physical hard drive

thats what i do now

My HTTP site on drive D: is backed up On Drive C:

Drive D: Has Two(2) 80 Gig Drives Hooked To A Raid 1 Controler.

so it is backed up a few times

my 24,000 top 100 songs are on a 160gig firewire drive, that is backed up on another 160 gig firewire drive.

now my 34,000 OTR files are on a New 300 gig drive that is not backed up in any shape or form, and i am just waiting for it to crash before i can get a 300gig USB drive to back it up on.
