Hi,

I'm pretty new to MC and have just purchased MC10. I love the audio file support and spent last night setting up a media server PC and hooking it into my HiFi. Now I'm able to use my iPAQ to wirelessly select whatever music I want to listen too and pump the music around the house.  Cool....  

I'm less impressed with the Image file support on first glance though  

I have a very large collection of digital images (>10000) and I have taken great care to ensure the EXIF data is maintained in all images. This means that myself or anybody who I send my images to, can use any "viewing" application and get accurate information about the image.
An example is the "ImageDescription" tag. I ensure it always  contains the description of the image so that any file viewer can use this tag to display the information along with the viewed file.

Are there any plans for MC to have better support of EXIF and use and display the common tags?

MC should read the EXIF tags on import.  Have you checked in the tags?

I know my images files have the correct tags. What do I need to do with MC to ensure it displays all the image tags?

What about modifying or creating EXIF tags based on changes within MC?

 For example if I change the date of a file in MC, it doesn't seem to change the EXIF data in the JPG file. Likewise if I tag a JPG that has no EXIF data, it doesn't seem to create EXIF data for that picture. Is this data stored somewhere else in the JPG file or is it just in the MC library?

MC won't write EXIF tags.  It does store changes in it's own jpg tag.  I think you can add custom fields.

Searching here for EXIF may provide more info.  Extend the date range back a while.  EXIF was added about a year ago.

I've searched the archives for an answer to my question, but couldn't find one.

In cjdshaw's post he shows the EXIF differences between what MC File Properties shows and what is available within the JPG file.

Does MC10 only use the tags currently displayed by File Properties? If so, are there any intentions to support the additional tags at some point?

I gave it a month, and figured I would throw my hand up to request further EXIF support.  My EXIF tags, as well, contain quite a bit more information that is displayed in MC.  Is there a way to cheat MC to get the extended information?

I am getting into organizing my photos....  is there any response to this thread about whether there will be increased usage around EXIF in the future?

I want my photo tags in a standard format, not proprietary to Media Center.

Yeah, i know this one bites for us photo nuts ...

I would like to be able to get the Min/Max and current focal length in there and the mke/model of the camera so that I cld really implement a nice way to organize photos ..

All of this is in the extended EXIF data ... I know the feeling ... I will keep dreaming for now though

As I continue to reflect on my decision to use MC instead of Adobe Photoshop Album to manage my photos, might I respectfully ask why all the EXIF tags can't be managed through MC.  It seems everyone has their "favorite" (mine is Camera Model"), but there are what, only like 20 or 30 tags total?

Sorry if this has already been answered - but is there any news on the EXIF or IPTC standards support in Media Center?

I've started using Google's Picasa 2 to organize my collection as it supports IPTC comments and also writes to EXIF (not sure if it will go any further than a keyword field though).

The more support for EXIF and IPTC in MC, the more likely I'll continue using it to manage my photos. Using proprietary tagging seems unneccesary in this day and age - and I know that MC supports the standard tags in MP3s, which is the main reason I use it for music files.

Heck, I'd buy ANOTHER copy of the program if it help gets EXIF & IPTC native support.
