Updating Tags takes forever
« on: February 24, 2004, 07:15:11 pm »

Okay, not forever, but way too long in my opinion.

Updating a custom field and Genre on 55 files takes 2 minutes.  That seems too long.  At first I thought it was because they were being updated over the LAN to a Linux server, but the 55 files mentioned above are on my local hard drive.

Does this seem right?

I have noticed that in the last few builds.
I just updated a bunch. Didn't time it, but it was a lot slower then it used to be.
About 2 to 3 seconds per file.

What about the MC library.  Is that on your local hard drive too?

My drive is only a little fragged, I'm defragging anyway.

Yes, my library is stored locally, in the default location.

Pretty much everything about MC seems slow to me.  Opening, building file lists, scrolling through a list, switching playlists or visualizations, trying to rate a file in Playing Now.  Maybe playing now is causing the slowness.  I'll disable it for a while, and see if it gets better.

Alright, totally defragged, no plugins running, music playing (stops after song ends until after updating finished).

I have a total of 34,994 filed in my library, 4984 Audio, 29948 Images, 62 Video..

I updated 1 field in each of 6 smartlists in this order...

50 tags, took 1:40 minutes
43 tags, took 1:25 minutes
93 tags, took 1:30 minutes
  6 tags, took 1:30 minutes
60 tags, took 1:25 minutes
43 tags, took 1:15 minutes

So it appears that the number of files being updated does not matter.  I can only assume that the number of items in the database/library determines how long an update takes.  Both the library and the files being updated are on my local hard drive.

I'm not necessarily complaining about how long it takes, I really just want to know if others experience the same kind of times, or if it is just my setup.

Matt or Jim, does this seem about right, or do I need to do something?

Thanks

A lot depends on the type of file.  OGG and sometimes MP3 need to rewrite the whole file to change a tag, which is slow.

For MP3, doing the same files twice in a row should be much faster the second time because it for sure won't have to rewrite anything.

the files in question are mp3 files.  I plan on converting them to aac one of these days, should I just do that before updating tags, will that make it faster?

PS Thanks for the speedy reply Matt ;D

If MP3 tagging is slow, it's probably rewriting the file.

The good news this should only happen once because MC adds padding to the front.

You can configure when / if ID3v2 tags get created in Plugin Manager > MP3 in MC.

From what I've read, aac sounds better at the same bitrate, or more specifically to my situation, I can save 160 or 192 bit mp3's to 128 aac's without losing sound quality.  Or 128 mp3's to 96 aac's.

I'm trying to make sure I can get all of my music on a handheld for my trip around the world.  I will not be able to 'change' music as I grow tired, I have to take it all, so small is good.

But since you asked, why not?  Is there a reason to stick with mp3's? :-\

I'm not sure you would want to convert... If you plan on using another file type, then your better off re ripping them, If you convert lossy to lossy you will end up losing a ton of quality.

The only time that converting makes sence is if you are going from lossless to mp3 or aac or whatever.

not from riping from mp3 to acc, it will sound the same or worse.

now if you rip from the orginal source cd to aac thats another story

Yeah, that makes sense to leave the mp3's alone.  I guess I didn't think that one through all the way.  I've decided to convert my ape files to aac, and just figured I might as well convert them all, but after your input, I'll just leave em alone.

Still takes forever to update tags, but that's life I guess.

I tested it and I have not noticed a problem.

ID3v2 tags are at the front of a mp3 so if major info is added and it is pass the padding as matt said it will need to re-write the whole mp3 all over again and add more padding.

adding an Image may pass it past the padding also.

I agree with you.  However, sometimes when I want to free some space on my HDD I do convert.

I often convert downloaded mp3 320 CBR files to ogg q -4.99. It more than halves the file size and 99% of the time I hear no difference.
