Cover Art inside Files - Pros and Cons
« on: March 13, 2004, 11:48:11 am »

Hi.  Other than using more drive space (which I have plenty of righ now) what are the advantages/disadvantages of embedding cover art inside files (using the MC option "Store Cover Art Inside Files (if possible)".  It seems that this may be safer if the library is ever corrupted... is that true?  Are there any disadvantages?  BTW, about 95% of my files are APEs and the rest are MP3s if that matters.  Thanks.

Not all tags will support images inside the media file, not sure about Ape

MP3 id3v2 tags allow images inside the file. since ID3v2 tags are saved on the front of the media file when saving the tag programs must first write the tag out and then saved the media data. this means if there is no padding or the padding is too little the whole file must be re-saved from the front to the back.

I can confirm that cover art it stored in an ape header. 100K or so isn't much compared to the size of an ape file.
I think it makes things just a bit tidier and if you copy a song, the cover art goes with it. I haven't come across any disadvantages yet.

I used to store cover art inside the file, but for some reason, MJ/MC always seemed to lose it somehow. So I stopped. Anybody know if this has been corrected?

Yep, you said it.

No advantage really. MC can handle images seperately quite well.

You can never have enough drive space :)
