I tried searching for this but came up with nothing. I'm currently using a tag editor that looks up info from AllMusicGuide and saves "Extra" info such as Tones and Styles into mp3 files. I'd like to import these tags into MC. I can see the tag and data in the AW in File Type Info window, however, I can't seem to get them to appear in the tag editor. I realize there would be issues as far as editing goes, but is there a way I could import these tags and then copy/move them to another MC tag? I've tried creating the field with the same name, no luck.

Have you tried updating the library from tags???  I'm not sure that's the solution but it's the only thing that comes to mind..  

BTW,, what's the name of the program you're referring to?  I'm interested..

I believe if you create the fields in MC (Make sure the names match exactly) then do an  update library from tags, it should import them.

Not sure what app quisp is referring to but The Godfather does what he describes.

It's freeware and quite powerful but in my opinion the interface isn't the best.

Thanks, all. Yes, I'm using the Godfather which works pretty well (wish it would look up the album or artist automatically based on the selected tag, but once you find what you are looking for it takes 1 click to get it and another to apply).

I have created the two fields in question in MC, Styles and Tones (there rest are standard tags) and I've done an update library from tags but it has never worked (works for standard tags, but not for custom). The fields are there, MC "sees" them in the File Type Info window, but these are read-only and I can't base smartlists on their values.

J River team, is this a bug, or is there something I'm/we're missing/doing wrong?

PS: Godfather's interface is extremely awkward, I just focus on my one or two tasks and try not to look at anything else, I don't want to get hurt...

MP3 needs a table to go from a user created field to an ID3v2 tag ID so we can get data from other programs.

We already handle Conductor, Composer, Lyricist, Original Lyricist, Original Artist, Initial Key, and Subtitle along with all the stock fields.  If you would like others, let us know.

What about Mood, Situation, Styles, Tone, & Quality ??   These seem to be supported in some other apps..

Secondly, It would be awesome if MC would do some automatic tagging sorta like the Godfather app.  For instance, automatically look up this data on AMG or other sites and map[ it to previously specified tag fields.  I use the tones and styles data and store them in the custom fields of APE files.  Clicking a button and having MC pull it down for me would save a ton of time and maybe earn you a case of beer...

If MC could do this, I'd give the responsible party a car. I'm not saying it'd be mine to give but...

Seriously, at the very least, for what I need from AMG, STYLES and TONES are the big ones at the moment (EDIT: also, CREDITS). I like to use Genre for the overall main category and then break genre into sub-categories by filling in Styles. Then tones are good for impressionistic...ah...impressions of artists, combine this with BPM and intensity and one can create very specifc smartlists with interesting happy accidents.

And, really, I don't know what licencing, if any is involved, but some sort of automated AMG look up would be great, but The Godfather can do what I need fornow, I just need a way to get what it does into MC. I like to get out of TGF as soon as I can, it gives me the willies.

I think the list so far is:

Tones - taken from AMG database (saved by The Godfather)
Styles - taken from AMG database (saved by The Godfather)
Credits - taken from AMG database (saved by The Godfather)

I'm not sure about where these come from, but they have also been requested:

I would really like these columns added as well but it's not going to work very well unless they can be parsed so that if their is a song that has multile styles and tones it will show up when any one of those are selected!  I also think that TGF is very cumbersome but powerfull and would like to see MC access AMG directly.

Seriously this is about as close as you can get to just being able to think of a song and have it automatically play especially with the tones.

I would also like to see some of these fields added. I have several thousand mp3's containing the "style" and "tones" fields generated in "the godfather" but don't seem to be able to use them at all in MC.

Exploring some more in media center, it looks like you can parse the data within a field by using the semicolon.  This is great except for the fact that AMG seperates their tones and styles using a ",".  I think there needs to be an option that allows you to chooses whatever character you want to seperate and identify values in a field.  Just type in the key and hit ok.

Seriously if you could do this and have full integration with AMG, I think there would be a tone of people who be very generous with their credit cards!

Hmm styles & tones sound interesting.

What would a representative list of them look like ? How do styles differ from genre for instance.

Also more imortantly how well/accurately does an other person's perception of what stlyes & tones are on a track (match) your own

in short do you agree with the results you have got of amg concering ( stlyes & tones). i admit this will take some time as you go through the huge amounts of music you have and compare and contrast.

Styles is basically a hyper extended version of genre.  Go to www.allmusic.com and check it out!  I think the true value in it is that fact that a single song could have musltiple styles and some of those styles could relate to songs that may be completely different.  Search for the stlye punk could reveal songs from artists that most people would not have thought of as punk!  I Know amg reviews each album from an artist and gives it different styles so clearly an artist like David Bowie would have many different styles varying from album to album.

Obviously its just a starting point and is really only valuable for people with fairly large collections.  Then again I think most people who use MC have those types of collections that are large and diverse.
