There's no difference in the code anymore between gridlines being on or off, so all the same operations (at the same speed) happen in either case.

Is it possible it's just a coincidence?

It's too easy to reproduce to be a coincidence.

You know, there's this game called dominoes.... The best (indirect) treatise on good domino stratedy (in my humble opinion) can be found in the legendary tome, _The Mythical Man Month_, by a guy named Brooks. You've probably heard of him. And it. Cf. chapter 16 in particular.
