Saving Tag Changes Request...
« on: March 27, 2004, 08:25:14 pm »

I'm just beginning to move my library (~17000 files) from an older file server to a new dedicated media machine.

Twice now, I've...
Selected a group of 1000 files.
  Chosen "rename files from properties".
Said "yes" to the confirmation for saving the tags.
  Walked away.
Come back after an hour and found nothing happened because I forgot to select something else[/b] to trigger the file move and update.

It's really frustrating.

Did I miss some option somewhere that commits the changes immediately?  If not, how about one?

More info...

I had one odd thing happen last night...    I selected 293 files and did a rename which should have caused a move.  I then selected something else.  Nothing happened.   I then selected the next 600 files and did the same rename.  This time I got a confirmation dialog for the first 293 followed immediately by one for the 600.    I then selected something else.  Only the batch of 600 actually were moved but the tags were changed for all 893.  I didn''t notice until I tried to play something from the first batch and MC complained that the files weren't there.

Has anyone else experienced something like this?

Hey, cool... I just reported something similar to this in the bug thread.   ;)

I'm glad to know it simply wasn't operator error. :)

I have seen this as well.  I haven't investigated it fully, but it seems that the move itself doesn't happen until the "Updating Tags" progress bar comes up.  I am not sure what you need to do to trigger this to come up though ... It seems somewhat random, though usually selecting some file other than the ones you moved seems to work.  It appears to affect both the "Move/Copy Files" tool and the "Rename Files from Library" tool.

We used to make the changes right away, but a lot of people requested that we don't.

This is so that doing a bunch of operations on the same selection doesn't require mutliple tag rewrites.  Undo is instant this way as well if you make a goof.

Ahhh ... That makes sense.  What will trigger it to "write" the changes to disk (or is it just timed)?

Possibly you should add a "Apply Move/Copy Operation Immediately" option to the Rename from Properties dialog to alleviate the confusion, and give those of us who never make mistakes ( :D ) a way to do it right away.

Changing views or what files are selected will cause changes to get applied.

I can see why someone who makes a lot of individual changes might want them batched but for larger updates it just doesn't make sense to have to click "something else" to get the updates to commit especially since there's no indication that that's what you have to do.

For large tag changes, you get a message box asking if you really want to change the tags anyway.  Saying yes should perform the commit immediately.  Or maybe there should be a "Yes and Commit" button.

For operations like "rename files...",  that don't give confirmation boxes, a "commit immediately" option on the initial dialog would be great.

This way, those that do the individual tag changes can keep it batched and those that do mass changes can get them committed immediately or at least predictably.

As I'm thinking about this, maybe if there are pending tag changes an action window item shows up that contains the tracks with changes and has a button to commit them.

What is a 'large tag change'. 10 files, 20? Or 1'000? It is very relative...
